Disaster flick Twisters isn’t just blowing away moviegoers, it’s blowing up IMAX! This weekend, the tornado-filled film generated a whopping $11.2 million on IMAX screens worldwide, contributing to a massive global total of $21.25 million.
With its incredible special effects and wide shots, Twisters is a perfect fit for the giant IMAX screens. But IMAX success isn’t the only story. Twisters also had a phenomenal domestic opening of $80.5 million, attracting audiences, especially in the American heartland.
In North America, IMAX theaters raked in a cool $9 million, a huge 11.2% of the film’s domestic earnings. This success is thanks to Universal Pictures, who ensured the tornado-chasing adventure played to a packed IMAX audience.
Internationally, Warner Bros. helped Twisters contribute $2.2 million to the global IMAX total. Early international releases pushed the global IMAX total even higher, reaching $12 million.
