A new anime feature inspired by a classic manga is heading to streaming this summer, as THE RIBBON HERO has officially been announced for a worldwide release on Netflix on August 8, 2026. Alongside the announcement, the platform revealed the film’s first teaser trailer, main key visual, and voice cast details, offering an early look at the ambitious project.
The film draws inspiration from Princess Knight, one of the most influential works by legendary creator Osamu Tezuka. With a fresh story and modern animation approach, THE RIBBON HERO aims to reintroduce the themes of courage and identity to a new global audience.
Teaser Trailer Hints at a Dark Fantasy Journey
The newly released teaser trailer sets the tone with a bleak and emotional opening. It shows a kingdom left in ruins after a devastating calamity, followed by a wounded Sapphire struggling to survive.
As the sequence unfolds, the narrative shifts from despair to determination. A mysterious figure appears, and Sapphire gains the ability to transform, symbolized by flowing ribbons that surround her. The visuals then transition into action-heavy scenes, including a confrontation with a monstrous threat and glimpses of a shadowy antagonist.
The trailer suggests a story that blends emotional storytelling with high-stakes fantasy, positioning Sapphire not just as a survivor but as a hero driven by purpose.
A New Take on Sapphire’s Story
At the center of the film is Sapphire, a princess who has lost her homeland to a destructive force known as Nergal. After fleeing her destroyed kingdom, she finds temporary refuge in a new land, only to face the return of the same threat that took everything from her.
The character’s journey is defined by resilience and resolve. Determined not to lose anyone again, Sapphire takes up her sword and chooses to fight back. The story frames her as a lone hero who must overcome both external enemies and the emotional weight of her past.
This reinterpretation builds on the legacy of Princess Knight while introducing a darker and more action-driven narrative suited for modern audiences.

Voice Cast and Creative Team Behind the Film
The role of Sapphire will be voiced by Saya from Lalande, marking her first lead role in a feature-length animated film. Reflecting on the experience, she shared, “Now that I’m over 30, I’ve never had a job where I struggled and enjoyed the challenge this much. I’d be so happy if you could watch it!”
The film is directed by Yuki Igarashi, who previously gained recognition for his animation work on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and his directorial debut in Star Wars: Visions – Lop & Ochō. This project marks his first time leading a full-length feature film.
Character designs are handled by Kei Mochizuki, with additional concept collaboration from Mai Yoneyama. The animation is produced by OUTLINE, known for its visually striking and character-driven work.
A Strong Production Lineup Supports the Vision
THE RIBBON HERO brings together an experienced creative team across multiple departments. Music for the film is composed by Satoru Kosaki and Ryuichi Takada of MONACA, known for their work on various high-profile anime projects.
The film’s visual identity is further supported by art director Masanobu Nomura and CG director Akine Nagamine, ensuring a polished blend of traditional animation and digital effects. Sound direction is handled by Keiichiro Miyoshi, adding another layer to the film’s immersive experience.
