The action-adventure and space Western series called The Mandalorian is based on George Lucas’ Star Wars, American Space Opera franchise. The Mandalorian gets produced by John Bartnicki in Los Angeles, California. The series has three seasons, but the basic story revolves around the bounty hunter, Din Djarin, who struggles to protect a cute kid named Grogu.

The series, with overall 24 episodes, get streamed on Disney+, and every episode lasts 30 to 52 minutes. Every season has eight episodes. The first episode of the first season of The Mandalorian premiered on 12 November 2019. However, this date does not mention the Mandalorian timeline because they follow BBY and ABY like we, the humans, follow BC and AD.

The Mandalorian Timeline

The years in BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin) got counted in descending order. On the other hand, the years in ABY (After the Battle of Yavin) get counted in ascending order with no sign before the year.

So, ABY starts from zero. It shows how The Mandalorian has set a fully fictional world. The remaining article will take you through The Mandalorian timeline and help you understand where it fits amid the other Star Wars movies. The Mandalorian takes place in 9ABY.

Tales Of The Jedi

Tales of the Jedi got released for viewers in the US on 26 October 2022. However, they showed different timelines for all six episodes in the series. So, it took place between 50 BBY and 18 BBY. Ashoka was born in 36BBY and was shown a bit older at 34BBY.

In the second episode, Dooku is present and Qui-Gon’s master. So, it takes place between 60BBY and 50BBY. Windu, born in 72BBY, becomes a council member at 28. So, the third episode depicts 44BBY. The fourth episode shows 32BBY.

The fifth episode depicts 22BBY to 20 BBY due to the Phase 1 Armor and the outfit shown in Clone Wars seasons 1 to 5. The final episode shows the fall of the Jedi and the fight between Ashoka and an Inquisitor. So, it lies far away in 18BBY.

Episode I: The Phantom Menace

The first episode of Star Wars, The Phantom Menace, got released on 19 May 1999 in the US. Sith, hidden for 1000 years, came out in 32BBY to present himself to the Jedi in this episode. It depicts the period of the Galatic Republic.

On the one hand, the viewers liked the music, McGregor, visual effects, Neeson, and action. On the other hand, they were concerned about the characters, screenplay, and Lloyd’s performance.

Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Considering the prequel trilogy, Episode II: Attack of the Clones turns out to be the second part of the Skywalker Saga and the fifth movie of the Star Wars franchise. The movie got released in May 2002. Events in this film took place a decade before the Battle of Naboo when the Civil War was about to start. So, it gets fit in 22BBY, a decade after the Phantom Menace.

Several planetary systems became a part of the independent systems led by Count Dooku after leaving the Galatic Republic. Obi-Wan Kenobi comes across the Republic’s clone troopers. According to the viewers, the movie has underdeveloped characters and a clumsy plot though it gets appreciated for thrilling action.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

The Clone Wars started in the fifth month of 22BBY and ended in the fifth month of 19BBY. Several Clone Wars took place during these years before the Battle of Yavin, and they went beyond the Range of the Sith.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, released in 2008 and revived in 2020, may seem to be out of the timeline because the creator of the movie, George Lucas, wanted to bring more characters and stay away from the restrictions caused by sticking to the timeline.

Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

The war reaches the crisis after three years of the Attack of the Clones, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith takes place in 19BBY, 19 years after Star Wars: A New Hope. The events in the movie occur within four days.

Count Dooku dies, and the Battle of Coruscant gets fought on the first day. Anakin gets hired on the second day to keep an eye on Palpatine. He also gives the Wise Speech on the same day. Anakin comes to Mustafar, and Kenobi gets a mission on the third day.

The Bad Batch

The animated series, Bad Batch, got released in 2020. Talking about the Star Wars timeline, Bad Batch gets fit in 19BBY with no considerable time jumps. Even the second season begins in the same period. The Bad Batch occurs before the Rebel Alliance and after the rise of the Empire.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch focuses on the Clone Force 99, their enemies and allies, and the secrets of the galaxy they come across. It begins with Order 66, which takes place after the Revenge Of Sith.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

The second anthology movie, Solo, got released in May 2018. Solo comes after the Clone Wars and before the beginning of the Rebels. However, the Rebels are about to begin and the Empire is at its height. So, the period is 13BBY to 10BBY, i.e. 10 to 13 years before the New Hope. The movie focuses on Han Solo, the Star Wars character.

Han runs away from the local gang but later, Chewbacca and the criminal underworld. The space adventure was fast-paced and entertaining despite several flaws. However, it could satisfy the loyal fanbase and attract the new ones.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s presence was traced in 9BBY and a decade after the Revenge of Sith. Obi-Wan, one of the powerful Jedi Knights, was born in 57BBY. His youth and Temple life were from 56BBY to 41BBY. The Padawan Adventures took place from 41BBY to 32BBY, and he got into knighting and Phantom Menace in 32BBY.

Obi-Wan was a part of the Clone Wars and Attack of the Clones that took place from 31BBY to 19BBY. He was in exile from 19BBY to 9BBY. He rescued Leia Organa and met Vader for the second time in 9BBY. He took part in the Desert Adventures from 9BBY to 0BBY and died in the Battle of Yavin in 0BBY.

Obi-Wan appeared as a ghost from 0BBY to 34BBY and got pulled back in the sequel trilogy from 34BBY to 35BBY.

Star Wars Rebels

A group of rebels rose with the rise of the Galatic Empire 14 years after the massive downfall of the Jedi Order and the Galatic Republic. So, the movie represents the period from 5BBY to 0BBY. The movie is in chronological order and fills the gaps well.

So, no need to jump from one episode to another. Star Wars Rebels and Ashoka have a difference of 10 years. The timeline of the former movie is in line with Andor.

Andor

The first season of Andor takes place in 5BBY, and the second season from 4BBY to 1BBY. Andor is shown as the prequel to A New Hope and Rogue One. The empire gets formed after the 14 years of Andor. New Viewers need not watch the movies sitting before Rogue One on the timeline because the movie stands by itself. Moreover, the movie directly leads to A New Hope at the end.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Rouge comes with all new characters as it is the spin-off of Star Wars. The events in the standalone Star Wars movie occur right before the New Hope. The period shown in this movie is from 15BBY to 0BBY. Rogue One, released in 2016, explains how the empire’s weapon was snatched using the Death Star plans and how Princess Leia got them.

Episode IV: A New Hope

Episode IV takes place in 0BBY/ABY. It looks like we have reached more than halfway in the Mandalorian timeline. But, real Star Wars start here. It was the first movie of the franchise. The revenge of the Sith and the formation of the Galatic Empire occur after 19 years of A New Hope.

Episode IV: A New Hope got released in July 1978 and re-released in 1980 with the additional subtitles ‘Episode IV’ and ‘A New Hope’ in the opening sequence. However, these changes offended several media outlets.

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back, released in May 1980, takes place in 3ABY. The events of Star Wars occurred three years before Episode V. However, this sequel gets too dark, and everything goes to hell. The protagonists get closer to death while escaping from Hoth.

Yoda becomes Luke’s mentor, and the movie brings one of the greatest reveals. However, the prequels seem to spoil it according to the chronological order.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

The sixth episode, released in May 1983, takes place in 4ABY. As the name suggests, the Jedi, Anakin Skywalker, returns and kills Palpatine. On the one hand, the Empire tries hard to destroy the rebel, Luke Skywalker, using the powerful Death Star. On the other hand, he attacks the space station.

Some fans and critics consider the movie to be the weakest of the original trilogy as compared to the first two episodes. Still, it stands at the 72nd rank among the top 250 films according to the Internet Movie Database.

The Mandalorian

The emperor in The Return of Jedi got defeated five years before The Mandalorian, released in 2018. So, the period shown in this movie is 9ABY, 25 years before the awakening of the force. It gets applied to both seasons. Yoda and Grogu belong to the same species. So, they are similar but not the same.

We know Grogu but George Lucas, the creator of the movie, has kept Yoda mysterious. Baby Yoda appears for the first time in Star Wars through the first season of The Mandalorian, and the second season lets us know more about him.

The Book of Boba Fett

The Book of Boba Fett, released in 2021, takes place before the third and after the second season of The Mandalorian. Grogu and Mando reunite at the end of Boba Fett, and the third season of The Mandalorian begins after it.

Approximately 9BBY gets shown in this movie, and there is a two-year gap between The Mandalorian Season 2 and The Book of Boba Fett. The appearance of Din Djarin to help Boba Fett attracts the audience. Otherwise, the movie does not entertain much.

Star Wars: Resistance

Star Wars: Resistance gets tricky while bagging the place in the Star Wars timeline. However, it gets expected to take place in 34ABY. The Force Awakens starts after six months of Star Wars: Resistance.

Resistance, released in 2018, gets related to the sequel trilogy, while Rebels gets related to the original trilogy. On the one hand, it has several crossovers. On the other hand, it is a standalone movie. You will find it weaker if you compare it with Rebels and Clone Wars.

Episode VII: The Force Awakens

The timeline shown in The Force Awakens, released in May 2015, is 34ABY. The events in the movie begin 30 years after the Return of the Jedi. The protagonists fight in the fictional movement called and paramilitary force called Resistance. J.J. Abrams is the director, writer, and producer of the movie.

The movie got successful in the US and Canada but not in Latin America, Asia, and India. So, the audience living overseas has no craze for this retro film as those in North America do. However, critics gave lots of positive responses to the movie.

Episode VIII: The Last Jedi

Released in December 2017, The Last Jedi takes place in 34ABY. The movie got written and directed by Rian Johnson. The main protagonist, Leia Organa, leads the Resistance Force. But Poe Dameron destroys the First Order by going against her order.

Luke Skywalker gets recruited by Rey in Resistance. On the other hand, Rose and Finn begin with their mission. However, everyone ends up landing on the salt planet.

Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

The events in The Rise of Skywalker have no strong timeline. But it looks like it took place a year after The Last Jedi, i.e., in 35ABY. Episode IX, released in December 2019, got written, produced, and directed by J.J. Abrams.

Kylo Gen searches for the Phantom Emperor, General Leia Organa wants to increase the army, and Rey gets ready for the battle. According to some viewers, the movie is emotionally rounded and elegant, but the climax does not seem to raise the bar.
