In a move that has sent ripples through the global music industry, the legendary “Queen of K-pop,” BoA, has officially concluded her 25-year journey with her longtime agency, SM Entertainment.

On January 12, 2026, the company issued a heartfelt and extensive statement announcing that their partnership officially ended as of December 31, 2025.

This departure marks the conclusion of one of the most successful and influential artist-agency relationships in the history of Korean pop music, signaling a major turning point for the artist as she prepares for a new chapter in her career.

A Pioneering Partnership and Legacy

BoA’s story is inextricably linked with the rise of the Korean Wave. Debuting in 2000 at the tender age of 13, she quickly became a trailblazer for K-pop’s international expansion.

SM Entertainment’s statement honored her as the “Star of Asia” and an “icon of global expansion,” highlighting how she pioneered the entry of Korean music into markets like Japan and beyond.

For a quarter of a century, BoA was not just an artist; she was a symbol of SM’s growth and ambition.

Her relentless effort and passion led to unparalleled records, and she eventually grew into a respected producer and mentor for countless junior artists who now drive the modern K-pop boom.

A Mutual and Amicable Farewell

The agency emphasized that the decision to part ways came after “extensive and in-depth discussions” with the artist.

The tone of the farewell was one of deep respect and gratitude, with SM Entertainment stating it was a “true honor” to have walked alongside her for every step of her journey.

To commemorate her 25-year tenure, the agency released a special tribute video titled “You still our No.1 BoA,” which looks back at her historic debut, her numerous chart-topping hits, and her evolution into a senior executive-level figure within the company.

Even as the exclusive contract ends, SM vowed to continue supporting her future endeavors as she seeks out new challenges.

BoA’s Personal Reflection

Following the official announcement, BoA shared a concise yet emotional message with her fans (Jumping BoA) via her personal Instagram account. Reflecting on her decades-long career, she wrote,

“Having given and received without holding back, I leave without regrets. I’m grateful for the time we shared and will continue to support the ever-shining SM Entertainment. Thank you.”

This sentiment of leaving “without regrets” resonates with her reputation for being one of the most hardworking and disciplined performers in the industry.

Her message was met with an outpouring of support from fans and colleagues alike, who thanked her for being a source of inspiration for so many years.

Looking Toward the New Chapter: Kwon BoA’s Future

While her next steps have not been explicitly detailed, the industry is buzzing with speculation about what the future holds for BoA.

SM Entertainment specifically noted their support for “Kwon BoA the person,” suggesting that she may explore paths beyond the traditional idol career, potentially focusing more on music production, acting, or perhaps even founding her own creative venture.

Given her status as a pioneer, her departure from SM Entertainment is seen as the beginning of a “Second Chapter” where she has total creative freedom.

As the music world waits to see where the “Star of Asia” will land next, her legacy at SM Entertainment remains a foundational pillar of the K-pop industry.

BoA’s Career Highlights at SM Entertainment (2000–2025)

  • 2000: Debut with the album ID; Peace B.
  • 2002: Historic breakthrough in Japan with Listen to My Heart, becoming the first Korean artist to top the Oricon chart.
  • 2009: U.S. debut with the self-titled album BoA.
  • 2012: Returned to Korea with the hit “Only One,” showcasing her skills as a songwriter.
  • 2022: Joined the supergroup GOT the beat, representing the “Queen” of SM’s female lineup.
  • 2025: Celebrated her 25th anniversary with the comeback single “Crazier.”

We wish BoA the very best as she embarks on this historic new journey!
