“Successor,” a Chinese comedy drama, debuted at the top of the mainland China box office, earning RMB 358 million ($50.4 million) over its opening weekend.

The film portrays the journey of a struggling father and hardworking mother striving to escape poverty despite facing numerous challenges.

Meanwhile, “Despicable Me 4” also performed well but secured the third position, indicating robust competition in the box office.

The synopsis describes the narrative of “Successor,” focusing on Ma Chenggang and Ma Chunlan, who rely on their son Ma Jiye as their sole hope to improve their lives. Jiye excels academically and is portrayed as resilient and determined.

However, as he matures, Jiye starts noticing the increasingly unusual behavior of those around him, setting the stage for the film’s exploration of societal dynamics and personal growth amidst adversity.

“Successor,” co-directed by Yan Fei and Peng Damo and starring Shen Teng, Ma Li, Shi Pengyuan, Sa Rina, and Xiao Bochen, has made a strong debut at the Chinese box office. It’s projected by Maoyan to achieve a lifetime gross of RMB 1.6 billion ($220 million).

Last week’s top film, “A Place Called Silence,” dropped to second place with a 22% decrease, accumulating $121 million since its July 3 release.

“Despicable Me 4,” earning $17.7 million in its opening weekend, is forecasted by Maoyan to reach RMB 370 million ($51 million), comparable to other successful Hollywood films like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Dune.”

Over the weekend, Bona Film’s “A Legend,” starring Jackie Chan, opened with $9.8 million, including previews.

Despite controversy over its use of AI and VFX to de-age Chan, the film garnered attention. Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” slipped to fifth place with $2.3 million, totaling $43.1 million since its June 21 release in China.

The combined success of the top three films pushed China’s weekend box office to $111 million, contributing to a year-to-date total of $3.61 billion, which lags 14% behind the same period in 2023.

This figure also trails Comscore’s estimate of $4.11 billion for the current North American box office in 2024.
