Hayao Miyazaki’s next project remains one of the biggest mysteries in animation. The 85-year-old Studio Ghibli co-founder has repeatedly announced his retirement over the years, yet he continues to work at the studio, with its new CEO Kenichi Yoda reportedly saying that Miyazaki

“comes to the studio every day.”

According to a recent Bloomberg deep look into Studio Ghibli, even people close to the legendary filmmaker do not know exactly what he is currently developing. Yoda reportedly said,

“Only he knows exactly what he’s working on,”

leaving fans without confirmation about whether another feature film is actually in production.

Miyazaki’s next Studio Ghibli project remains secret

Miyazaki previously indicated that he was working on another film after The Boy and the Heron, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Studio Ghibli vice president Junichi Nishioka also previously said that the movie would not be Miyazaki’s final film.

His son, Goro Miyazaki, has offered a small hint about what could eventually emerge from his father’s latest work. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Goro described the project as

“looking like an action-adventure-type movie, nostalgic and reminiscent of the old days.”

For now, however, Studio Ghibli has not officially announced a new Miyazaki feature. The studio is also facing questions about its creative future, with Goro being considered as a potential successor while the company continues resisting pressure to become a conventional franchise-driven animation studio.

As Miyazaki continues appearing at Studio Ghibli, his mysterious project remains completely under wraps. If he is indeed developing another film, fans may have to wait for the filmmaker himself to reveal it.
