Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Resonance is off to a promising start on PlayStation 5, earning a user rating of approximately 4.8 out of 5 stars on the PlayStation Store. The new role-playing game launched on October 22, 2026, and brings a classic Final Fantasy adventure to modern platforms through the franchise’s first HD-2D instalment.
According to PlayStation LifeStyle’s report, the game had received a rating of 4.78 out of 5 from nearly 5,000 votes shortly after launch. That translates to approximately 96 out of 100, although this figure represents player feedback rather than a critic review score. The standard edition costs $49.99 on the US PlayStation Store.
Final Fantasy Resonance Brings Back Classic RPG Gameplay
Developed by Lancarse and published by Square Enix, Final Fantasy Resonance revisits the story of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. However, it is more than a direct port. Square Enix has rebuilt the original game’s first story arc into a console-style RPG, removing its mobile-game structure in favour of a traditional single-player experience.

According to Square Enix’s official announcement, the game combines pixel-art characters with modern lighting and detailed three-dimensional environments. Its turn-based combat also introduces strategic mechanics designed to give familiar RPG battles a fresh feel.
The story takes place in the kingdom of Grandshelt, where the mysterious Veritas of the Dark threatens the world by targeting its Crystals. Players embark on a journey to protect these sources of power while encountering familiar elements of the franchise, including chocobos, espers and appearances from characters such as Cloud and Tidus.
The game’s HD-2D presentation draws on the visual style of classic role-playing games while using modern effects to create more detailed environments. This approach could appeal to longtime fans who prefer traditional turn-based combat over action-focused systems.
Final Fantasy Resonance is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Its early PlayStation Store rating suggests that many players have responded positively to the return to classic RPG conventions, although its reception may evolve as more players complete the adventure.
