Sonic Mania 2 is not currently moving forward, but Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has revealed that a future follow-up has not been ruled out. In an interview with Game Informer Iizuka said SEGA remains close with the developers behind the acclaimed 2017 game and still has an interest in working with them again.
The key detail for Sonic fans is that Iizuka did not shut down the possibility of Sonic Mania 2. Instead, he made it clear that the idea remains open despite there being no active plans for the sequel.
Sonic Mania 2 Has Not Been Ruled Out
Speaking with Game Informer, Iizuka discussed SEGA’s relationship with the Sonic Mania development team. He explained that the original developers are currently focused on their own projects and business priorities, but Sonic Team still sees the potential for another collaboration.
“We don’t have anything to talk about now, but there’s definitely a desire to want to work with them again, and we think they could make a great game,”
Iizuka said.
“It’s not off the books yet, but it’s not something that’s moving forward currently.”
That leaves Sonic Mania 2 in an unusual position. There is no confirmed sequel, no announced development project, and no indication that one will arrive soon. However, Iizuka’s comments suggest that SEGA has not permanently moved on from the idea either.
Sonic Mania was released in 2017 and became one of the franchise’s most successful modern 2D entries. Developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games, the title brought back classic pixel-art Sonic gameplay while remixing familiar zones and introducing new stages. SEGA later confirmed that Sonic Mania had sold more than one million copies worldwide.
The game’s success has kept demand for a sequel alive for nearly a decade. In 2025, Sonic Mania director Christian Whitehead also shared images from an early Sonic Mania 2 prototype, further reminding fans that a follow-up was once explored.
For now, however, Iizuka’s latest comments offer cautious hope rather than confirmation. Sonic Mania 2 may not be in development, but according to the Sonic Team lead, the possibility remains “not off the books.”
