Agatha All Along has captured the attention of audiences and won’t let go. The miniseries, led by Kathryn Hahn, features a fantastic cast that includes the legendary Patti LuPone and Saturday Night Live alum Sasheer Zamata. It has avoided the usual review bombing, and its latest episode was a wild and surprising ride.

The fifth episode, titled “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power,” shocked viewers with the unexpected death of Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn). She lost her life while trying to save Agatha. However, Agatha absorbed Alice’s powers and life force.

Agatha’s Power Absorption Ability

Agatha has always shown her great powers since she first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Absorbing the powers of other witches is her main ability. In the beginning of WandaVision’s “Previously On,” we see her take out her Salemite coven using this ability.

She also semi-robs Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) of her powers during “The Series Finale.” So, it is not a surprise that Agatha would be willing to use this ability on a member of her new coven.

In “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power,” viewers witness a shocking moment when Alice Wu-Gulliver dies while trying to save Agatha. It raises many questions about how Agatha’s power-absorbing abilities work.

Is she fully in control of her powers, and how did she learn them in the first place? Agatha All Along has not given us all the answers yet, but we can show what we know so far.

Agatha’s power absorption ability is straightforward. Instead of being hurt by a blast of magic from another witch, Agatha absorbs the magic and takes on that witch’s powers.

This means she is almost invulnerable to magical attacks. She can also forcefully draw power from those who try to use magic against her. Even Wanda, the Scarlet Witch, can only defeat Agatha by trapping her in a rune circle, which renders Agatha’s magic void.

The series hints that Agatha learned to harness her power absorption from the Darkhold, a book of forbidden magic. Agatha spent many years with the Darkhold, which may have helped her understand how to use her powers.

Before her attempted execution by her Salem coven, Agatha’s mother, Evanora (Kate Forbes), accused her of breaking the coven’s rules and using power beyond her rank.

However, Agatha insists she did not break the rules; instead, the rules bent to her power. The timeline is not clear, but it is possible that the Darkhold gave her this rule-breaking power. This fits with the character motivation she has been given.

While Wanda’s immense power comes from natural talent, Agatha has spent centuries honing her craft. Her ability to absorb other witches’ powers could be seen as a result of jealousy toward the raw power of the prophesied Scarlet Witch.

Comparisons to Rogue from X-Men

In the comics, Agatha has many magical abilities, including telekinesis, telepathy, and teleportation. However, one ability she does not have in the comics is power absorption.

The creators of WandaVision and Agatha All Along seem to have borrowed this magic trick from a well-known X-Men character: Rogue. Both in the movies and the comics, Rogue can absorb both power and life force from others. However, she must physically touch them to do so.

Similar to Agatha’s victims, those affected by Rogue’s ability are left as shells of their former selves, and the effects can be dangerous. This connection suggests that Agatha’s powers might have some limits or conditions. The ability to absorb life force and magic poses many moral questions about her character and her choices.

The Question of Control

In “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power,” Agatha’s actions lead us to wonder if she fully controls her absorption powers. Agatha accuses Wanda of using magic on autopilot in WandaVision, pointing to how Wanda controlled all of Westview at once.

However, Agatha might be able to do the same. In “Previously On,” Agatha demonstrates her range of magic to Wanda by using verbal spells for mind control, transmutation, and more. But she never uses verbal magic when she begins to absorb power.

There is a clear distinction between the magic being cast at Agatha and the moment she starts to draw power from the witches. This difference might imply that she has some choice in the matter. In both Salem and Westview, Agatha clearly uses her powers on purpose.

However, with Alice, it is less clear. While Agatha has her power drawn out, Teen (Joe Locke) jumps into action. He notices another presence in the room and finds an Ouija board spelling out Nicholas Scratch—the name of Agatha’s son. This suggests that there may be a deeper connection between Nicholas and the Darkhold.

If Agatha learned to absorb power from the Darkhold, could its knowledge have taken over at that moment? It is possible that Agatha saw an opportunity and took it, which aligns with her character. However, there is a chance that Agatha is not in full control of this power.

The episode’s title, “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power,” likely refers to the reveal at the end. Still, it could also hint at an inherent quality of her ability. Even though it meant sacrificing a member of her coven, in Agatha’s darkest hour, could her forbidden ability have awakened and repowered her?

The Role of the Darkhold

The Darkhold is a significant aspect of Agatha’s story. It is a book filled with powerful and forbidden magic that has existed for centuries in the Marvel universe. Many characters have sought it out for its knowledge and abilities, and it often leads to dark consequences.

The Darkhold holds knowledge that can corrupt its readers and twist their intentions. Agatha’s long history with the Darkhold suggests that it has profoundly influenced her powers and her decisions.

As Agatha shows her abilities, the Darkhold looms large in the background. It raises questions about how much of her power is genuinely hers and how much is a result of the dark knowledge she has acquired. The book may have helped her hone her skills, but it may have also clouded her judgment and motives.

The Complexity of Agatha’s Character

Agatha Harkness is a complex character, blending elements of both heroism and villainy. Her actions are often driven by a desire for power and control, but they also stem from her experiences and struggles. Agatha’s journey in Agatha All Along showcases her vulnerability and the dark forces that shape her character.

She is not just a villain; she is a character with depth, facing challenges and decisions that reflect her complex nature.

Agatha’s jealousy of Wanda’s power and her willingness to absorb the life force of others add layers to her personality. Viewers are left to grapple with their feelings about her actions. Is she a villain for sacrificing Alice? Or is she a survivor trying to show a world filled with threats?

The duality of Agatha’s character allows viewers to connect with her in unique ways. As she struggles with her powers and their consequences, audiences see her humanity and the weight of her choices.

The Future of Agatha All Along

As Agatha All Along continues to unfold, many viewers wonder what the future holds for Agatha and her powers. Will she learn to control her abilities more effectively, or will she continue to struggle with the darkness within her? The series has opened the door to many possibilities, including Agatha’s redemption or further descent into villainy.

With each episode, we learn more about her motivations and the origins of her powers. The tension between her past and her future remains high. Will Agatha find a way to use her abilities for good, or will she succumb to the darker aspects of her character? The future is uncertain, but it promises to be exciting.

Agatha’s Relationships with Other Characters

Another key element of Agatha’s story is her relationships with other characters in the Marvel universe. Her interactions with Wanda, her coven, and her son Nicholas Scratch add depth to her narrative. These relationships shape Agatha’s motivations and choices, highlighting her struggle for connection and power.

Agatha’s relationship with Wanda is particularly interesting. Initially, Agatha appears to be a mentor figure to Wanda, guiding her through her powers.

However, this dynamic quickly shifts as Agatha reveals her true intentions. Their relationship becomes a battle of wills, with both women fighting for control over their powers and destinies. This rivalry adds tension to the story and keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.

Agatha’s connection to her coven also plays a crucial role in her character development. The dynamics within the coven reveal the struggles for power and acceptance among witches.

Agatha’s desire for recognition and control often puts her at odds with her fellow witches, leading to conflict and ultimately her downfall. Her relationships within the coven showcase her vulnerabilities and her need for validation.

Lastly, the introduction of Nicholas Scratch adds another layer to Agatha’s character. As her son, Nicholas represents Agatha’s personal stakes and the consequences of her choices. Their relationship complicates Agatha’s narrative, as she must show her role as a mother while pursuing her ambitions.

Themes of Power and Sacrifice

The themes of power and sacrifice are central to Agatha All Along. Agatha’s journey reflects the cost of pursuing power and the sacrifices she makes along the way. Her willingness to absorb Alice’s life force to gain strength raises questions about the ethics of power dynamics and the lengths one will go to achieve their goals.

As viewers follow Agatha’s journey, they are confronted with the moral implications of her choices. Is the pursuit of power worth the sacrifice of others? How does the desire for control shape our actions and relationships? These themes resonate throughout the series, prompting audiences to reflect on their own values and choices.

Conclusion: Agatha’s Legacy

As Agatha All Along continues to develop, Agatha Harkness’s legacy is still in the making. She is a character who embodies both the allure and the dangers of power. Her story is a compelling scheme of ambition, sacrifice, and the complexities of human nature.

With her attractive journey through the Marvel universe, Agatha challenges viewers to think critically about power and its consequences. As she shows her path, she becomes more than just a witch; she becomes a symbol of the struggle for identity, control, and connection.

Agatha All Along invites audiences to join her on this journey, full of twists and turns. Her character represents the ongoing battle between light and darkness, and her choices will continue to shape her destiny. The future holds many possibilities for Agatha, and fans eagerly await what comes next.
