Sekiro: No Defeat is officially coming to Crunchyroll as an eight-episode anime series in January 2027. The adaptation of FromSoftware’s acclaimed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will stream weekly on the platform, giving international viewers a chance to experience an expanded version of the story.
Produced by KADOKAWA, Qzil.la and ARCH, Sekiro: No Defeat is a fully hand-drawn anime based on FromSoftware’s award-winning action game. While the theatrical version is currently screening in Japan, the upcoming Crunchyroll release will include additional content that goes beyond the movie.
The series will be available exclusively on Crunchyroll worldwide, with Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus excluded from the streaming release. The theatrical run in Japan was originally planned for only three weeks, but it has been extended because of continued audience demand.
Sekiro: No Defeat Expands Wolf and Kuro’s Story
Sekiro: No Defeat follows the core story of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, transporting viewers to a fantastical interpretation of Sengoku-era Japan.
At the center of the story is Wolf, a shinobi bound by loyalty to Kuro, the Divine Heir. Their journey becomes a violent struggle involving blood, sacrifice and the supernatural forces surrounding Kuro’s mysterious heritage.
The episodic format is expected to provide more room for the story and characters than the theatrical presentation. Crunchyroll describes the expanded series as a deeper experience of Wolf and Kuro’s journey while remaining faithful to the source material.
The anime previously received international exposure before its Japanese theatrical release. Sekiro: No Defeat screened at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival as part of its “Feature Films: Midnight Specials” program and later made its North American premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival.
Sekiro Anime Features Experienced Anime Creators
The adaptation is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna, with Takuya Satou handling the screenplay. Takahiro Kishida is responsible for character designs, while Shunsuke Fukui serves as deputy director.
The production team also includes chief animation director Kaito Moki, action animation director Takashi Mukoda, art director Yuji Kaneko, color designer Azusa Sasaki and cinematographer Keisuke Nozawa. Yoshinori Murakami serves as editor, with Yasushi Nagura directing sound and Shuta Hasunuma composing the music.
The main Japanese voice cast includes Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro/The Divine Heir, and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina.
The anime is produced by ARCH, with Qzil.la serving as the production company.
The anime adaptation is based on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the critically acclaimed action game developed by FromSoftware, the studio behind Elden Ring, Bloodborne and the Dark Souls series. Activision published the game, which has now sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
With Sekiro: No Defeat moving from its theatrical presentation into an eight-episode streaming format, international fans will get an expanded opportunity to experience Wolf’s story.
The January 2027 Crunchyroll premiere also positions the series as one of the major game-to-anime adaptations to watch next year.
