Sekiro: No Defeat director Kenichi Kutsuna has made an unusual request to fans ahead of the anime’s limited theatrical release in Japan. Kutsuna asked viewers who intend to watch the adaptation in theaters to avoid a newly released trailer, explaining that it contains a cinematic reveal that was not supposed to be shown beforehand.
The one-minute “The Battle in the Silvergrass Fields” trailer was published online on September 3, shortly before the anime began its three-week theatrical run in Japan. Kutsuna addressed the situation on his personal X account and apologized to fans who may have already encountered the footage.
Director Says Trailer Reveals a Scene Meant for Theaters
According to Kutsuna, the footage contains a moment that may not technically qualify as a plot spoiler but still has an important visual impact. He wrote that the scene includes
“a cinematic reveal that really shouldn’t be spoiled”
and expressed his wish for audiences to enter theaters without seeing it first.
Kutsuna later explained that the premature release resulted from negligence by ARCH, one of the companies involved in producing the anime. Sekiro: No Defeat is animated by Qzil.la and co-produced by ARCH and Kadokawa, with the director specifically clarifying that Kadokawa was not responsible for the trailer mishap.
Neither ARCH nor the other production companies had publicly addressed the situation at the time of reporting. The trailer also remained available online, meaning fans could still encounter the disputed footage.
The Japan theatrical release began on September 4, while the global version is planned for Crunchyroll at a later date that has yet to be announced.
