Resident Evil Earns Best Game Adaptation Nomination at Golden Joystick Awards 2026

The Resident Evil franchise has earned another major piece of recognition, with the 2026 film receiving a nomination for Best Game Adaptation at the Golden Joystick Awards 2026. The new movie joins five other adaptations in the category, giving Zach Cregger’s reinvention of Capcom’s survival horror series a chance to take home one of the awards.

The Golden Joystick Awards revealed its 2026 shortlist on September 25, with public voting now underway. Resident Evil is competing against Devil May Cry Season 2, Exit 8, Fallout Season 2, Iron Lung, and Mortal Kombat II for Best Game Adaptation.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil Takes the Franchise in a New Direction

Unlike a direct retelling of one of the games, Cregger’s Resident Evil presents an original story set within the franchise’s universe. Sony Pictures describes the movie as a reinvention of the series, following Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier caught in a terrifying night of survival.

Cregger previously explained to PlayStation Blog that he wanted to preserve elements that made the games memorable rather than simply recreate their stories. He specifically pointed to resource management, weapons and recognizable items as influences on the film.

The movie was directed and co-written by Cregger alongside Shay Hatten and produced by Constantin Film, Davis Films and Sony Pictures. It stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser.

The franchise has another reason to attract attention at this year’s awards. Resident Evil Requiem is nominated for Console Game of the Year and Best Game Trailer, while Angela Sant’Albano receives a Lead Performer nomination for Grace Ashcroft.

Voting for the current Golden Joystick Awards categories remains open until October 23, with Ultimate Game of the Year voting scheduled for October 26 through October 30. The winners will be announced during the ceremony in London on November 11, 2026.
