The reigning queens of seasonal K-pop, Red Velvet, have officially made their highly anticipated return to the music industry with their brand-new mini album, “Velvet Summer.”

Released globally on August 3 at 6:00 p.m. KST, this exciting project marks the group’s first full-length comeback as a five-member ensemble in approximately two years and two months, following the release of their extended play “Cosmic” in June 2024.

Despite members Wendy and Yeri transitioning to different agencies after their exclusive contracts concluded, all five members have reunited seamlessly under SM Entertainment for group promotions, demonstrating an enduring commitment to their shared musical journey and their fans.

Unlike the bright, energetic brightness of their past seasonal classics like “Red Flavor,” “Power Up,” and “Umpah Umpah,” “Velvet Summer” takes a mature, sophisticated, and dreamy approach.

The five-track mini album weaves together bossa nova guitar melodies, relaxed reggae rhythms, and house grooves, marrying a breezy seaside atmosphere with the group’s signature, sensual “Velvet” identity.

The release coincides with Red Velvet’s 12th debut anniversary, turning this comeback season into an extraordinary celebration of longevity, artistic growth, and continuous global popularity.

The Laid-Back Magic of Title Track “Surfin’ Boy” and Collaborative Production

At the center of “Velvet Summer” is its enchanting title track, “Surfin’ Boy,” a relaxed dance-pop song built on a foundation of bossa nova acoustic guitar and smooth house beats.

Adding a deeply personal dimension to the comeback, member Joy personally wrote the lyrics for both “Surfin’ Boy” and the album track “Hawaii.”

Opening up about her experience crafting the lead single’s lyrics, Joy shared,

“I wanted to express my feelings for Red Velvet and the fans through the lyrics. I aimed to convey that every reunion creates more beautiful memories. I hope my sincerity in cherishing our Lovely was felt.”

She added with emotion that during early preparations,

“Seulgi praised my lyrics for being easy to sing, which made me tear up with joy.”

The album also brings together an impressive roster of renowned hitmakers and longtime collaborators.

Legendary SM producer KENZIE contributed composition and lyrics to the track “Hot Girls Cold Vibe,” while acclaimed producer Hwang Hyun and lyricist Jo Yoon-kyung contributed their talents to the tracks “Orchestra” and “Hula Hoop,” respectively.

Speaking about the shift in tone for this release, Wendy remarked during an album Q&A,

“Summer has both energetic moments and lazy, relaxed days. ‘Velvet Summer’ and the title track ‘Surfin’ Boy’ reflect that mature, laid-back summer vibe.

We wanted to naturally showcase Red Velvet’s diverse musical colors within that atmosphere.”

Reuniting with Fans and Reflecting on a Meaningful 12th Anniversary

To commemorate their return, Red Velvet held a sold-out, three-day fan concert from July 31 to August 2 at the Hwajeong Sports Center at Korea University in Seoul.

Attendees were treated to the very first live stage performances of “Surfin’ Boy” and “Hula Hoop” ahead of the official digital drop.

On August 1- the exact day of their 12th debut anniversary- the group celebrated on stage with their fandom (ReVeluv), blowing out candles on a commemorative cake and sharing emotional reflections on their journey together.

Reflecting on the emotional reunion after more than two years, the group members expressed heartfelt gratitude for their fans’ unwavering patience and loyalty:

  • Irene: “We are so grateful to our Lovely for waiting over two years. It’s great to be back together- it feels lively in the practice room, and everything is just wonderful.”

  • Seulgi: “I’m really excited to share Red Velvet’s music with everyone again. After individual solo activities, I feel like we’ve grown a lot, and I hope our maturity is reflected in this album.”

  • Wendy: “Preparing a full-group album after a long time was thrilling. I wanted to repay the wait with good music and performances. I hope everyone enjoys ‘Velvet Summer’.”

  • Joy: “Now that we’re reunited, I want to create deeper memories for everyone. Harmonizing our voices again was emotional and overwhelming.”
  • Yeri: “First, I want to thank our Lovely for waiting so long. I missed preparing together as a group of five. This album is a gift to help everyone enjoy the hot summer coolly.”

With their unique blend of nostalgia, polished production, and unified vocals, Red Velvet once again redefines what a summer comeback can feel like, opening a vibrant new chapter in their twelve-year legacy.
