Prime Video has officially revealed the first-look images for its highly anticipated original series Carrie, offering fans an early glimpse at Mike Flanagan’s television adaptation of Stephen King’s legendary debut novel. The streaming platform also confirmed that the series will premiere this fall in more than 240 countries and territories, marking the first time Carrie has been adapted into a television series.
Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, the new adaptation aims to modernize King’s classic coming-of-age horror story while staying true to the emotional and psychological themes that made the original novel a cultural landmark. The announcement was accompanied by a collection of official images showcasing the principal cast, giving audiences their first look at the show’s updated interpretation of the iconic characters.
Mike Flanagan reimagines Stephen King’s classic horror story
Rather than simply recreating previous adaptations, Mike Flanagan’s version of Carrie introduces a contemporary setting shaped by social media, online harassment, and the emotional pressures facing today’s teenagers. The eight-episode series follows Carrie White, played by Summer Howell, a socially isolated high school student whose life changes dramatically after she is forced into public school following the sudden death of her father.
As Carrie struggles to fit into an unforgiving school environment, she becomes the target of a viral bullying scandal while simultaneously discovering powerful telekinetic abilities. According to Prime Video, the series explores how “small, everyday choices” gradually build toward the story’s unforgettable climax while examining larger themes of kindness, cruelty, identity, and belonging.
The official synopsis describes the project as “a bold, timely, and surprising reinvention” of Stephen King’s debut novel, expanding the original narrative with deeper character development and fresh emotional stakes.
Cast brings iconic characters back to life
Summer Howell takes on the title role after reportedly emerging from a casting search involving more than 1,000 actors. She stars alongside Samantha Sloyan as Carrie’s deeply controlling mother, Margaret White, one of the most memorable figures in horror fiction.
The supporting cast features Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross, Josie Tota as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, and Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle.
Flanagan serves as both writer and executive producer while also directing four of the series’ eight episodes. Stephen King is also attached as an executive producer, bringing the original creator directly into the production.
Flanagan is already well known for acclaimed horror projects including Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Fall of the House of Usher, making him one of the most recognizable names currently working in the genre.
Why Carrie remains one of Stephen King’s defining works
Originally published in 1974, Carrie launched Stephen King’s literary career and remains one of the most influential horror novels ever written. According to King’s official website, the novel spent 14 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list and has been translated into more than 35 languages while helping establish King as one of the world’s bestselling authors.
The story has inspired several adaptations over the decades, most notably Brian De Palma’s acclaimed 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek, which earned two Academy Award nominations and became a defining horror classic. More recent adaptations have introduced the story to new audiences, but Prime Video’s upcoming series marks the first serialized television version of the novel.
By expanding the narrative across eight episodes, Flanagan’s adaptation has significantly more room to explore Carrie’s relationships, personal struggles, and the events leading to the tragic climax that has charmed readers and viewers for more than five decades.
