Sad news for fans of romantic stories with a touch of history. Deadline reports that Prime Video has canceled My Lady Jane after just one season.

The show featured Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey, the Nine-Days Queen, and Edward Bluemel as her husband, Guildford, who has a significant secret. My Lady Jane released all eight episodes of its first and only season on June 27.

The series was based on a young adult novel by Bodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows. It followed Lady Jane Grey as she became Queen of England for a tumultuous nine days. The show’s twist on history involves two groups: Ethians, who can turn into animals at will, and Veritys, who cannot.

After marrying the charming Lord Guildford Dudley, Jane (a Verity) discovers that Guildford is an Ethian. His transformation seems to happen on a regular schedule, unlike other Ethians who change randomly.

Why Was ‘My Lady Jane’ Cancelled?

Despite its unique take on historical events with a fantasy element and its humorous nods to classics like Clueless and The Princess Bride, the show did not gain enough viewers. It was well-received by critics but did not attract a large audience.

The cast included Anna Chancellor as Jane’s mother Lady Frances, Rob Brydon as Guildford’s father Lord Dudley, Jordan Peters as Edward VI, Kate O’Flynn as Princess Mary, and Dominic Cooper as Lord Seymour.

The first and only season of My Lady Jane is available for streaming on Prime Video now.
