Onimusha: Way of the Sword generated an estimated $30.4 million on Steam during September 2026, bringing its total Steam revenue to approximately $33.7 million since its September 4 launch. The game has sold nearly 576,000 copies on Steam, according to Alinea Analytics, making it one of the highest-grossing premium releases on Valve’s platform during the month.

The Steam performance is particularly notable because Onimusha returned after more than two decades without a brand-new mainline entry. Capcom describes Way of the Sword as the first new game in the series in over 20 years, with Miyamoto Musashi serving as the protagonist in an Edo-era Kyoto transformed by supernatural forces.

Capcom also confirmed that the game surpassed 1 million units sold worldwide on its launch day. That milestone pushed cumulative sales for the entire Onimusha franchise beyond 10 million units, giving the revived series a significant commercial boost almost immediately after release.

Steam Is Giving Capcom Access to a Major Audience

One of the more interesting aspects of Onimusha: Way of the Sword is where its PC players are coming from. China represents more than one-third of the game’s Steam player base, making it the title’s largest country by Steam players, according to Alinea Analytics. This gives Capcom access to a major PC audience that cannot be reached in the same way through the franchise’s traditional console market.

The game’s pre-release strategy also appears to have helped its conversion. Around 30% of players who tried the Steam demo went on to purchase the full game, suggesting that allowing players to experience its combat before launch played an important role in converting interest into sales.

The game’s performance also extends beyond Steam. Alinea estimates that the PlayStation version has sold through approximately 835,000 copies, while the Xbox version has sold fewer than 50,000 copies. This makes PlayStation the game’s largest platform by copies sold, while Steam has emerged as an important additional market for Capcom.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is therefore more than another successful September release for Capcom. With nearly 576,000 Steam copies sold, $33.7 million in total Steam revenue, more than 1 million launch-day sales worldwide, and the franchise surpassing 10 million lifetime sales, the game has given one of Capcom’s dormant series a strong return.

The PC performance is especially significant because it demonstrates how Steam can expand the reach of established Japanese franchises into markets where console sales alone may not tell the complete story.
