Marvel fans have received disappointing news regarding the sequel to “Eternals,” one of the first movies of Phase 4. A new report from Variety says that “Eternals 2” is not in development at Marvel Studios.

This comes despite hints of a connection in the recent “Brave New World” trailer. In the trailer, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) flies past Tiamut, the giant Celestial visible in the ocean for nearly three years.

The original “Eternals” movie, directed by Chloé Zhao and co-written with Patrick Burleigh and Ryan and Kaz Firpo, made over $400 million worldwide. It has a 47% score from critics and a 77% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

The MCU Has Countless Possibilities for More “Eternals” Stories

While Variety’s report suggests there is no active development on “Eternals 2,” it does not mean Marvel has no plans for the Eternals in the future. It’s possible that development is on hold while Marvel figures out its next steps, especially with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom.

Following Jonathan Majors’ removal and the change in villain direction, Marvel might be reevaluating its plans. Let’s hope “Eternals 2” is just on hold and not canceled.

There’s still hope for more Eternals stories in the MCU. Since the film’s release in 2021, fans have hoped for a Disney+ series to give more depth to the characters, addressing one of the film’s main criticisms.

The revelation that the Eternals were robots created by the Celestials means there’s a lot of potential to revisit characters, even those who seemed lost.

While Kevin Feige has not confirmed the status of “Eternals 2,” fans should stay tuned to Otakukart for the latest Marvel news and can watch “Eternals” on Disney+.
