Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved another major milestone in the United States, becoming one of the fastest-selling video game consoles ever released. According to the latest figures from market research firm Circana, Nintendo’s latest hybrid system sold 5.9 million units during its first 12 months on the U.S. market. That performance makes it the second fastest-selling video game system since Circana began tracking sales in 1995.
The impressive sales record underscores the continued popularity of Nintendo’s latest hardware. While Switch 2 fell just short of the all-time first-year record, it now sits behind only the Game Boy Advance, which sold approximately 6.5 million units during its first year in the United States.
Strong monthly performance keeps Switch 2 on top
The milestone follows another dominant month for Nintendo in the U.S. market. Circana’s May 2026 sales report found that Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling hardware platform in the country in both unit sales and dollar sales. It also remains the best-selling console of 2026 year-to-date, reflecting strong demand well beyond its launch window.
The continued momentum suggests Nintendo has successfully built upon the success of the original Nintendo Switch. With upgraded hardware and a growing software library, Switch 2 has maintained steady consumer interest throughout its first year on sale.

The console’s success has been supported by Nintendo’s first-party software lineup. Circana’s latest monthly game sales rankings placed three Nintendo titles among the top 10 best-selling games in the United States during May.
Leading the publisher’s lineup was Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which reached No. 5 on the monthly chart. Popular first-party releases have traditionally played a significant role in Nintendo’s hardware sales, and the latest figures indicate that trend continues with Switch 2.
Although it narrowly missed surpassing the Game Boy Advance’s long-standing first-year record, Nintendo Switch 2 has established itself as one of the company’s most successful console launches in the U.S. With strong hardware sales and a steady stream of exclusive games, the platform appears well-positioned to maintain its momentum throughout 2026.
