Nintendo has officially confirmed a price increase for its popular subscription service, Nintendo Switch Online, marking the first major revision since the service launched in 2017. The update, announced by Nintendo, will take effect in Japan starting July 1, 2026, and impacts both standard memberships and Expansion Pack tiers.

The announcement, published via Nintendo’s official support page, outlines updated pricing across all subscription tiers while also addressing how the changes will affect current users.

Revised Pricing for Nintendo Switch Online in Japan

Beginning July 1, Nintendo Switch Online subscription costs in Japan will increase across all available plans. The standard individual membership will see its one-month plan rise from ¥306 to ¥400, while the three-month plan increases from ¥815 to ¥1,000. The annual individual plan also jumps from ¥2,400 to ¥3,000.

Family plans are also affected, with the 12-month option increasing from ¥4,500 to ¥5,800. Meanwhile, the premium Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack tier will now cost ¥5,900 annually for individuals, up from ¥4,900, while the family plan rises from ¥8,900 to ¥9,900.

Nintendo stated in its announcement: “We sincerely apologize to everyone using Nintendo Switch Online, but we ask for your understanding.” (Nintendo Support)

These prices include tax and will apply to all new purchases as well as renewals processed after the implementation date.

For players already subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online, the key detail lies in automatic renewal timing. If a user’s next billing date occurs after July 1, 2026, the updated pricing will be applied automatically.

Nintendo clarified that users can check their renewal schedule and subscription status via their Nintendo Account page. The company also noted that billing for automatic renewals is processed up to 48 hours before expiration, meaning some users may still be charged under the older pricing depending on timing.

Importantly, subscriptions cannot be canceled mid-term. Users must disable auto-renewal in advance if they wish to avoid being charged at the new rates.

Why Is Nintendo Increasing Prices Now?

While Nintendo has not provided a detailed explanation for the pricing change, industry analysis suggests broader economic factors may be influencing the decision. The Japanese yen’s continued weakness has created pricing disparities between regions.

For example, prior to the increase, a 12-month Switch Online subscription in Japan cost significantly less than its US equivalent. The new pricing brings Japan more in line with global markets, reducing that gap.

Additionally, Nintendo has recently adjusted hardware pricing in Japan, including increases for Switch and Switch 2 systems. This suggests a broader pricing strategy aimed at stabilizing revenue amid currency fluctuations.

Nintendo Switch Online remains a core part of the Switch ecosystem, providing essential features such as online multiplayer, cloud save backups, and access to a growing library of classic games.

Subscribers also gain access to retro titles spanning multiple generations, including NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Nintendo 64 games. The Expansion Pack tier further enhances this offering with additional libraries and downloadable content for select titles.

The service also supports features like voice chat through a mobile app and GameChat functionality, making it an integral part of Nintendo’s online infrastructure.
