Netflix is bringing back one of its most requested promotional offers—at least on a limited basis. After discontinuing its popular free trial program in 2019 and 2020, the streaming service has confirmed that it is testing the return of free trials in select international markets.

The experiment marks the first time in six years that Netflix has offered prospective subscribers the opportunity to try the service for free. While the company has not announced a broader rollout, the current test appears to target first-time Netflix users in countries outside the United States and the United Kingdom, with trial lengths varying by region.

Netflix confirms limited free trial experiment

Speaking to What’s on Netflix, a Netflix spokesperson confirmed that the company is evaluating the promotion as part of its ongoing subscriber acquisition strategy.

“We regularly test promotions to help prospective members experience the value of Netflix,”

the spokesperson said.

According to the report, the free trials are currently available only in selected markets and are limited to users who have never subscribed to Netflix before. Screenshots shared by Netflix Portal indicate that Brazil is among the countries participating in the test, with some users seeing 14-day trials while others have reported 30-day offers.

Netflix has not confirmed which additional countries are included or whether the promotion will expand globally.

Netflix previously phased out its traditional 30-day free trial between late 2019 and 2020, replacing it with alternative marketing strategies such as the Watch Free portal, which allowed viewers to stream selected movies and first episodes of popular series without creating an account.

Since then, the company has experimented with region-specific promotions, including discounted subscription offers tied to live sporting events such as the World Baseball Classic in Japan. These campaigns reflect Netflix’s broader strategy of testing different ways to attract new subscribers in individual markets.

As with previous A/B tests, Netflix is expected to evaluate user engagement and conversion rates before deciding whether free trials should return more broadly.
