A still from Namco Legendary Mountains gameplay

A new puzzle experience inspired by classic arcade history is on the way, as Bandai Namco and BeXide have officially announced Namco Legendary Mountains for both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. The title is scheduled to launch in Summer 2026, though an exact release date has not yet been confirmed.

The newly revealed game aims to combine nostalgic elements from Namco’s arcade legacy with modern puzzle mechanics, offering a fresh take on a familiar genre. By blending recognizable characters with physics-based gameplay, the project is positioned to appeal to both longtime fans and casual players.

A Puzzle Game Built on Arcade Nostalgia

At its core, Namco Legendary Mountains follows a concept similar to popular merging puzzle games like 2048 and Suika Game. Players drop and combine matching objects to create larger ones, gradually building toward higher scores. However, the new title introduces a major twist by placing this gameplay in a fully 3D environment.

Instead of flat tiles or grids, players interact with “Voxel capsules” that can be tossed into a dynamic playfield. When two identical voxels collide, they merge into a larger form, creating a chain of progression that rewards careful placement and timing. The challenge lies in managing space and preventing pieces from falling out of the field.

This shift to 3D mechanics adds a layer of depth that distinguishes the game from its predecessors, making positioning and physics an essential part of the experience.

Iconic Namco Characters Return in Voxel Form

One of the standout features of the game is its use of classic Namco properties. Characters and elements from legendary franchises are reimagined as voxel-style designs, giving them a blocky, retro-inspired aesthetic while maintaining their original identity.

Players will encounter dedicated stages themed around iconic titles such as Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Xevious, Mappy, and The Tower of Druaga. Each stage is designed to reflect the visual and musical identity of its source material, creating a nostalgic atmosphere that celebrates Namco’s history.

Beyond visuals, the inclusion of classic soundtracks adds another layer of immersion. These familiar audio cues are expected to resonate strongly with fans who grew up with the original arcade games.

Progression, Customization, and Replay Value

The game also introduces a progression system built around collecting over 100 unique voxel items. As players complete challenges and achieve higher scores, they unlock new designs that can be used to customize their experience.

A dedicated “Collection Room” allows players to display and arrange their unlocked voxels, effectively creating their own personalized showcase. This feature encourages creativity and adds a sandbox-like element to the otherwise competitive gameplay loop.

In addition, the title includes a global online ranking system, enabling players to compete for high scores against others worldwide. This competitive aspect is designed to replicate the classic arcade experience, where players aimed to see their names on the leaderboard.

A Modern Take on Classic Arcade Competition

The emphasis on high scores and leaderboard rankings highlights the game’s roots in arcade culture. By combining modern online features with traditional score-based gameplay, Namco Legendary Mountains aims to recreate the thrill of classic arcade competition in a contemporary setting.

The inclusion of multiple themed stages and collectible elements also ensures long-term engagement, giving players reasons to return beyond simply chasing higher scores.
