Netflix’s new true-crime docuseries Death of the Pastor’s Wife has renewed public attention on the death of Mica Miller, but the series has also apparently caused confusion involving a South Carolina church with a similar name. Mercy Baptist Church in Conway says it has been mistakenly targeted by people who believe it is connected to the Myrtle Beach church associated with pastor John-Paul “JP” Miller.
The Conway congregation says it has received phone calls, emails, and hostile social media comments despite having no affiliation with JP Miller, his ministry, or the church at the center of the documentary. Church leaders have now publicly addressed the confusion as the Netflix series continues to draw attention to Mica Miller’s story.
Why Mercy Baptist Church Is Being Mistaken for JP Miller’s Church
The confusion stems from the similar names of Mercy Baptist Church in Conway and Mercy Church in Myrtle Beach, the latter being associated with JP Miller. The Conway church has stressed that it is an entirely separate organization and has no connection to the ministry featured in Netflix’s three-part documentary.
“We just want everybody to know that Mercy Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina, has no affiliation with any of that,”
church council member Kenny Lee told WPDE. Lee also emphasized that the congregation is separate from the Mercy Ministries connected to the documentary and asked people to stop directing hostile messages toward the church.
The situation has become particularly concerning for the Conway congregation because it operates a child ministry and daycare. Church leaders also said that businesses that have previously supported the church have received hateful messages, apparently because of the mistaken association.
The controversy comes after Netflix released Death of the Pastor’s Wife on August 26. According to Netflix Tudum, the three-part series examines Mica’s life, her troubled marriage to JP Miller, and the circumstances surrounding her April 2024 death.
Mica, 30, was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina on April 27, 2024. Her death was officially ruled a suicide, while the documentary examines allegations surrounding her relationship with JP and the events leading up to her death.
JP Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica’s death, but he was indicted in December 2025 on federal charges involving alleged cyberstalking and making false statements and has pleaded not guilty. His trial is currently scheduled for October 2026.
The documentary’s renewed popularity has therefore brought significant attention to the people and institutions connected to the case. However, Mercy Baptist Church’s statement makes clear that the Conway congregation is not affiliated with JP Miller or the church featured in the Netflix series.
