Matthew McConaughey has explained why he ultimately decided against playing Joel Miller in HBO’s The Last of Us. The actor confirmed that he had conversations about the role but said the project arrived at a point when he had stepped away from acting and was focusing on other pursuits.
Joel was eventually played by Pedro Pascal, whose performance became one of the defining elements of the HBO adaptation. McConaughey now says his decision was less about the quality of The Last of Us and more about whether he wanted to commit to a television series at that stage of his career.
Why Matthew McConaughey Passed on Playing Joel
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McConaughey explained that he was doing more writing and considering other opportunities when The Last of Us entered his orbit.
“I wasn’t really acting at that point,”
McConaughey said, adding that The Last of Us
“was really good but it wasn’t for me at the time.”
The actor also pointed to the long-term commitment involved with successful television shows. Unlike a feature film, a major series can require an actor to remain attached to the same character for several years if the production continues.
“I don’t know what would have been for me at the time,”
McConaughey explained. He contrasted television with The Rivals of Amziah King, which offered him a more contained commitment as a feature film.

McConaughey’s comments also align with earlier remarks from The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin. In 2023, Mazin confirmed that he had spoken with McConaughey during the casting process but said discussions never became particularly serious.
“It was more of just like, ‘Hey, here’s something we can talk about,’”
Mazin said at the time, while acknowledging that McConaughey could have delivered a strong performance.
Ultimately, Pedro Pascal became HBO’s Joel, appearing opposite Bella Ramsey as Ellie. McConaughey’s explanation suggests that Joel was never rejected because he disliked the material; instead, The Last of Us arrived when he was not ready to commit to another potentially multi-year television production.
HBO has since moved forward with the next stage of the adaptation. Season 3 is expected to expand the story around Abby and introduce additional characters from The Last of Us Part II, continuing the series beyond Joel and Ellie’s original journey.
