Anime streaming platform HIDIVE is expanding its Summer 2026 lineup with the highly anticipated historical drama The World Is Dancing, officially set to premiere on June 29. Adapted from Kazuto Mihara’s acclaimed manga, the series blends history with fiction to explore the birth of Noh, Japan’s centuries-old theatrical art form. Alongside its streaming debut, the anime will also receive a special showcase at Anime Expo 2026, building strong momentum ahead of release.
Set in 14th-century Japan during the conflict between the Northern and Southern Courts, The World Is Dancing follows a fictionalized version of real-life Noh co-founder Zeami Motokiyo. Reimagined as a 12-year-old performer named Oniyasha, the story tracks his emotional and artistic journey as he searches for meaning in dance. With its historical setting and introspective narrative, the series aims to stand out from more action-driven anime this season.
What The World Is Dancing Is About
The story unfolds during a turbulent era when shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu was rising to power, shaping the cultural and political terrain of medieval Japan. Oniyasha, the son of a sarugaku troupe leader, begins as a boy unsure of why people dance at all. His perspective changes when he encounters a performance that deeply moves him, sparking curiosity and a desire to understand the art form.
As the narrative progresses, Oniyasha meets new people, faces personal struggles, and slowly begins shaping his own artistic identity. The anime presents this journey as both a coming-of-age story and a cultural exploration of how Noh theater evolved. By combining historical context with fictional storytelling, it offers a unique look at how art can emerge from uncertainty and personal growth.
The World Is Dancing will premiere on June 29 as part of HIDIVE’s Summer 2026 simulcast lineup. The series will be available to subscribers across the United States, Canada, and select international regions including Australia and New Zealand. An official English-subtitled trailer has already been released, giving viewers a first look at its detailed animation and atmospheric tone.
In addition to its streaming debut, HIDIVE has confirmed that Episode 2 will receive a world premiere screening at Anime Expo 2026. The event is scheduled for July 2 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, offering fans an early look into the series beyond its opening episode. This kind of early showcase reflects growing industry trends of building hype through fan-focused convention events.

The anime brings together a strong creative team led by director Toshimasa Kuroyanagi, with series composition and script by Sawako Kawamitsu. Character designs are handled by Keigo Sasaki, while animation production is managed by Cypic. The voice cast includes Yumiri Hanamori as Oniyasha, along with Maaya Uchida, Romi Park, and Takahiro Sakurai, adding depth and experience to the project.
Even before its official release, The World Is Dancing has gained industry recognition. The series received a Special Award at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia on May 1, one of Asia’s largest international short film festivals accredited by the Academy Awards. This early honor highlights the anime’s artistic ambition and strengthens its credibility ahead of its premiere.
