Ridley Scott’s trailer for the “Gladiator” sequel has been released, featuring Paul Mescal as Lucius, the nephew of former Emperor Commodus.

The trailer includes intense scenes such as a water battle in the Colosseum and Lucius being rammed by a rhino.

Despite his high status, Lucius fights as a gladiator, echoing the epic struggles from his childhood memories of Maximus, portrayed by Russell Crowe in the original 2000 film. The first “Gladiator” film won five Oscars, including Best Actor.

“I remember that day. I never forgot it, that a slave could take revenge against an emperor,” Lucius says, before we see him in a flashback from the first film, being dragged to safety by his mother.

The first “Gladiator” film follows Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius, chosen by the ailing Emperor Marcus Aurelius to succeed him. However, Marcus Aurelius is murdered by his son Commodus, who seizes the throne.

Commodus orders Maximus’ family killed and Maximus himself sold into slavery. Rising through the ranks as a gladiator, Maximus returns to Rome seeking revenge against Commodus.

The World History Encyclopedia describes gladiatorial contests as “bloody entertainment” and a display of wealth for emperors, attracting up to 50,000 spectators for life-and-death battles.

These contests often included wild animals, such as the tigers in the original “Gladiator” and a rhino in the sequel. Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Maximus in the first film garnered significant admiration.

Similarly, Paul Mescal, who gained a large following from his role in the BBC drama “Normal People,” may experience a similar surge in popularity with his role in “Gladiator II.”

Lucius in the “Gladiator” sequel mirrors the honorable Maximus, fighting from a lowly position with a higher purpose.

Captured from his home far from Rome, Lucius is brought to the city as a prisoner and becomes a gladiator. He works for Macrinus, portrayed by Denzel Washington, who sponsors fighters similar to Oliver Reed’s character Proximo in the first film.

Lucius protects his birthright, saying he doesn’t know where he was born, adding:

“I never knew a mother and or father.”

“You will be my instrument,” Macrinus responds.

In the “Gladiator” sequel, the twin emperors, portrayed by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger, are depicted as corrupt, laughing demonically as gladiators die in a mock water battle, a historically accurate event.

Lucius’s mother, Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, reprising her role), watches in horror as her son fights, uncertain if she recognizes him. She eventually connects Lucius to Maximus by giving him a ring that belonged to the late Roman general.

Like the original, the sequel seems to focus on the theme of power corruption, showcasing worthy, embattled individuals challenging Rome’s rulers.

Lucius’s journey echoes Maximus’s struggle, emphasizing the fight against the corrupt leadership embodied by the twin emperors.

Lucius upholds the values of “strength and honour,” while another Roman general, Marcus Acacius (played by Pedro Pascal), declares,

“I will not waste another generation of young men for their vanity,” highlighting his disdain for the corrupt emperors.

The trailer ends with a dramatic scene of Mescal’s Lucius and Pascal’s Marcus Acacius battling in the arena. Lucius appears to have the upper hand, holding two swords crossed over the general’s neck. However, the full extent of Marcus Acacius’s morals remains unclear.

Initial responses on X were mixed, with some people expressing excitement for the “Gladiator” sequel, while others doubted it would live up to the original.

Some fans spotted what looked like sharks in the water battle, with filmmaker Kyle Prohaska saying:

“I’m all in on Gladiator II. I’ll go just for some of those insane sequences. Sharks in the arena? A rhino? Denzel? Come on. This is definitely one of those sequels nobody asked for, but this one looks better than most.”

Another post, from a user called @FilmmakerJeff, called the trailer “underwhelming”.

“I hate to report that I’m not a fan of the Gladiator II trailer,” he said.

“Terrible music choice, nothing from it gave me reassurance that it could be even close to as good as the original, and honestly, it looks like it could be pretty good at best. My hype meter dropped a notch.”

There was also disagreement on social media regarding the soundtrack, which featured “No Church in the Wild” by Jay-Z and Kanye West.

One user wrote:

“In what world does the sequel to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator need Jay-Z and Kanye West? Stop shoehorning songs into trailers.”

Another in favour though, wrote:

“That pounding hip-hop really works on the Gladiator 2 trailer. Fits so well to the era.”
