Japanese band First Love is Never Returned are turning their everyday working lives into music with their first full major-label album, W.O.R.K.S.
The five-member group continues to hold regular jobs alongside their music careers, making the album’s workplace-focused concept especially personal.
Released on October 7, W.O.R.K.S. marks a major milestone for the Hokkaido-based band.
The 12-track album, including six newly recorded songs, is their first release distributed nationwide through physical CD stores in Japan and is being positioned as their official major debut.
The album’s lead track, “退職代行 (Taisyoku Daikou)”, takes inspiration from a distinctly modern Japanese workplace phenomenon: resignation services that allow employees to have someone else communicate their decision to quit.
Instead of simply presenting the subject as a workplace joke, First Love is Never Returned turn the uncomfortable reality behind it into a song about pressure, frustration, and the difficulty of telling someone you want to leave.
The track was written and composed by vocalist Kazuki Ishida, while the arrangement was handled by FLiNR.
Its production deliberately changes character between the first and second chorus, with the band’s three vocalists representing different sides of the employee-and-boss relationship.
A progressively tightening funk-influenced sound mirrors the anxiety at the heart of the song.
“Taisyoku Daikou” Turns Workplace Frustration Into Music
The song explores the circumstances that can lead an employee to seek outside help when quitting becomes too difficult to handle directly.
Its lyrics portray a worker who has reached their limit, alongside an employer who gradually realizes that they failed to recognize the employee’s struggles.
The track’s title refers to Japan’s resignation-agent services, which have gained attention as an option for workers who find it difficult to communicate their resignation themselves.
FLiNR use the concept to explore the uncomfortable gap between what employees experience and what employers may understand about those experiences.
The accompanying music video takes the concept in a comedic direction.
Directed by Honoka Saito, it features comedy duo Tosa Brothers, Lucifer Yoshioka, and YouTuber Tamura Kae in a scripted short film based around the same resignation theme.
The workplace concept also extends beyond the lead single.
“期末評価会議 (Kimatsu Hyouka Kaigi)”, written by guitarist and keyboardist Keita Kotakemori, was intentionally created as a counterpart to “Taisyoku Daikou,” approaching the same workplace tension from another perspective.
The song has also been described as one of the band’s heaviest live recordings.
Five Members Bring Their Own Working-Life Perspectives to W.O.R.K.S.
One of the most distinctive aspects of W.O.R.K.S. is that every member contributes as a songwriter.
Alongside Ishida, Keita Kotakemori, Arata Yamamoto, Mizuki Tsunemoto, and Yuji Sato each wrote a track as the primary songwriter, giving the album five different creative perspectives.
The record moves beyond its workplace theme with a variety of musical influences.
“TPTTC”, which the group has performed since 2019, is their first entirely English-language song and combines 2000s pop-punk influences with modern US pop and boy-band-style vocal harmonies.
Yamamoto’s “Atrium” draws inspiration from his admiration for Michael Jackson, while Tsunemoto’s “Twilight” incorporates elements of 1980s US pop.
Bassist Sato contributes “ミッドナイトブルー (Midnight Blue)”, which explores a fusion-influenced AOR sound.
The CD+Blu-ray edition adds even more material, including the band’s first headline concert at Shibuya Club Quattro, a documentary tracing their roots in Sapporo, and interviews with all five members.
The package contains almost three hours of footage.
First Love is Never Returned will also take W.O.R.K.S. on the road through their #FLiNR ONE-MAN TOUR 26-27 “W.O.R.K.S.”, featuring six shows across five cities from November 2026 through January 2027.
The tour includes their first headline performances in Nagoya and Fukuoka, larger-capacity shows in Tokyo and Osaka, and two Sapporo dates.
For a band whose members continue balancing music with regular employment, W.O.R.K.S. is an unusually personal major debut.
Rather than separating their musical lives from their working lives, First Love is Never Returned have turned the pressures, frustrations, humor, and realities of employment into the very material shaping their latest record.
