Nintendo has reaffirmed its commitment to independent game developers, with President Shuntaro Furukawa highlighting the growing importance of indie titles across the company’s gaming platforms.
Speaking during Nintendo’s latest shareholders meeting, Furukawa described indie games as “extremely popular” on Nintendo systems and outlined the company’s efforts to encourage developers to launch their games on Switch and Switch 2 earlier.
The comments came in response to a shareholder question about why many indie games debut on PC before arriving on Nintendo consoles. The discussion was later published in Nintendo’s official shareholder Q&A.
Nintendo wants more indie games to launch earlier
Furukawa acknowledged that many independent games build significant momentum on PC before making their way to Nintendo hardware. While this release pattern remains common across the industry, he said Nintendo is actively working to make its platforms more attractive for developers from the beginning of a game’s lifecycle.
According to Furukawa, Nintendo will continue promoting indie projects through initiatives such as Indie World, which showcases upcoming independent titles for Switch players. He stated:
“Indie games are extremely popular on our platform as well.”
He also added that Nintendo
“will continue our efforts to ensure developers recognize the benefits of releasing games on our dedicated consoles and to encourage them to launch their titles as early as possible.”
Furukawa noted that indie developers have played an important role since the original Nintendo Switch launched, with many original titles reaching the top of the platform’s sales charts. He said these games “contribute significantly to the market’s vitality,” underscoring their importance alongside Nintendo’s first-party franchises.
Successful indie releases such as Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Hades, and more recently Hollow Knight: Silksong, have demonstrated the strong demand for independent games on Nintendo platforms.
By continuing to highlight these titles through programs like Indie World and encouraging earlier launches, Nintendo appears committed to strengthening its relationship with indie developers as the Switch 2 generation continues to grow.
