Sandfall Interactive is refusing to let the enormous success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 dictate what comes next. Director and CEO Guillaume Broche says the studio is prepared to make major creative changes with its next game, even if some players ultimately dislike the result.

In an interview with French outlet Konbini, Broche explained that Sandfall is not trying to recreate its debut game’s success by simply giving fans more of the same. When discussing the possibility that the studio’s next project could receive a weaker response, he offered a remarkably straightforward answer:

“Maybe people won’t like it. That’s life.”

Sandfall Won’t Chase Expedition 33’s Success

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 became a breakout success for Sandfall Interactive, earning widespread critical acclaim and selling millions of copies. The game’s performance has naturally created expectations for whatever the studio develops next, but Broche appears determined not to let commercial pressure reshape the team’s priorities.

Broche said Sandfall’s approach remains focused on making games the developers themselves want to play.

“We didn’t make the first game to please anyone. And I think that’s why it worked,”

he explained during the Konbini discussion.

That philosophy also means the studio isn’t planning to simply increase the scale of its next project because it now has more attention and resources. In a separate interview with AUTOMATON WEST, Broche argued that limitations can encourage creativity and said Sandfall wants to remain a focused studio.

Broche has previously confirmed that Clair Obscur is the franchise name, while Expedition 33 represents one story within that franchise. That leaves open the possibility of another story set in the same universe rather than a conventional direct sequel.

For now, Sandfall has not revealed the identity or release window of its next project. Broche has said the team wants to rediscover the creative passion that drove Expedition 33 and is willing to “go a bit crazy” with its next project.
