Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic could take a more straightforward approach to storytelling than some recent role-playing games, according to veteran developer Mark Darrah. The former Dragon Age executive producer believes Casey Hudson, who is leading development through his studio Arcanaut Studios, may favor a simpler hero’s journey over the increasingly elaborate narratives associated with some modern RPGs.
Darrah shared his thoughts during an interview with Eldorado.gg, discussing what players might expect from the upcoming Star Wars game. Although he acknowledged that its structure and gameplay remain difficult to predict, he expressed confidence in Hudson’s ability to deliver a compelling cinematic experience.
The project has attracted attention because Hudson previously led development on major BioWare titles, including Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. However, Fate of the Old Republic is being developed by Arcanaut Studios rather than BioWare, making its eventual direction an open question.
Mark Darrah Expects Cinematic Storytelling From Casey Hudson
Darrah’s confidence comes from Hudson’s experience directing games where cinematic presentation and character-driven narratives are central to the experience. Hudson directed the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, making him a natural fit for another story-focused science-fiction RPG.
Speaking to Eldorado.gg, Darrah said:
“One thing I can be confident of is that it’s gonna be really good at cinematic storytelling, because that’s something that Casey cares very deeply about.”
He added that he expects the game to tell its story effectively, although he admitted he has little confidence in predicting how its overall structure will work.
The comments are expectations from a fellow industry veteran, not confirmation of the game’s final design. Darrah specifically acknowledged that he might be interpreting Hudson’s intentions incorrectly when suggesting that the project could move toward a simpler narrative.
According to the official Arcanaut Studios announcement, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a single-player, narrative-driven action RPG being developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The project is described as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic, but it will tell an entirely new story rather than directly continue the original game’s plot.

Why a Simpler Story Could Matter for the New Star Wars RPG
Darrah’s comments come amid continued debate about narrative design in modern role-playing games. He suggested that some recent BioWare titles may have become too self-indulgent in their storytelling, potentially making a more focused hero’s journey appealing for Hudson’s next project.
His remarks also touch on criticism surrounding Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which received mixed reactions from longtime fans over aspects of its writing. However, Darrah did not claim that simplifying the story was necessarily the only lesson Hudson should take from BioWare’s recent releases.
For Fate of the Old Republic, the challenge will be balancing an accessible central narrative with the meaningful choices, character development, and branching decisions that made Knights of the Old Republic memorable. A simpler story does not necessarily mean a less complex RPG, particularly if the game retains deep character interactions and consequential player decisions.
With the project still in early development, its narrative structure and gameplay systems remain unconfirmed. Darrah’s comments offer an experienced developer’s perspective on what Hudson might prioritize, rather than a definitive description of the finished game.
