Dark Horse Comics has announced an English-language release for Gou Tanabe’s manga adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, expanding the publisher’s ongoing collection of Lovecraft manga. The announcement was made during Dark Horse’s Anime NYC 2026 presentation and confirms the adaptation for Spring 2027.
Tanabe has become closely associated with bringing Lovecraft’s unsettling stories into manga. His adaptation of The Call of Cthulhu won the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel, while his other Lovecraft adaptations have also earned major award recognition.
Dark Horse Brings Another Lovecraft Manga to English Readers
The upcoming The Case of Charles Dexter Ward Volume 1 will be adapted by Tanabe, translated into English by Zack Davisson, and lettered by Steve Dutro. Dark Horse has set the first volume for Spring 2027 with a listed price of $14.99.

The project is another addition to Dark Horse’s growing line of Tanabe’s Lovecraft adaptations. The publisher has previously released works including The Call of Cthulhu, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and The Shadow Out of Time.
Tanabe’s reputation also gives the announcement extra weight. NecronomiCon Providence describes him as a manga creator whose Lovecraft adaptations have received multiple Eisner and Harvey Award nominations, while his work won the Best Series award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2020.
What The Case of Charles Dexter Ward Is About
Lovecraft’s story follows Charles Dexter Ward, a young man whose fascination with his ancestor Joseph Curwen leads him into increasingly disturbing occult research. Ward becomes obsessed with discovering information about Curwen, a mysterious figure associated with alchemy and forbidden practices.
His investigation eventually takes a darker turn when he begins conducting strange experiments and attempting to recover knowledge connected to his ancestor. His increasingly erratic behavior results in his confinement in an asylum, where his physician, Dr. Willett, begins to suspect that something far more sinister is happening.
Tanabe’s adaptation is particularly notable because The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is one of Lovecraft’s longer and more detailed stories. An earlier report on the Japanese serialization noted that the manga had begun appearing in Kadokawa’s Comic Beam magazine in chapters.
