CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 has officially surpassed 40 million copies sold worldwide, marking a major commercial milestone for the studio’s flagship RPG. The announcement, shared via the company’s official social channels on July 3, 2026, highlights the game’s sustained performance more than five years after its original release.
The milestone places Cyberpunk 2077 among a select group of games to cross the 40 million mark globally, reinforcing its position as one of the most commercially successful RPGs of its generation.
CD Projekt Red highlights long-term player engagement
Following the announcement, CD Projekt Red executive Michał Nowakowski reflected on the game’s continued success, stating:
“40 million copies sold shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best — creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years.”
The developer emphasized that long-term player engagement has been a key factor in the game’s resurgence, supported by ongoing updates and major content expansions.
Originally released in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 faced widespread criticism due to technical issues, performance problems, and missing features that had been heavily promoted before launch. The rocky debut led to refunds, platform removals, and intense scrutiny from the gaming community.

However, CD Projekt Red committed to long-term support rather than abandoning the project. Over time, the studio released multiple patches and improvements that significantly stabilized the experience. The transformation culminated in the critically praised Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023, which played a major role in rebuilding player trust and engagement.
Franchise expansion continues beyond the game
The success of Cyberpunk 2077 has also strengthened CD Projekt Red’s broader franchise plans. A full sequel is currently in development, alongside additional multimedia projects including a trading card game and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, continuing the universe established by the original anime adaptation.
In its official statement shared via CD Projekt Red IR, the company noted that Cyberpunk 2077 has provided a “strong foundation” for future projects within the franchise.
Despite its difficult start, Cyberpunk 2077 has evolved into one of gaming’s most notable redemption stories. Its sustained sales growth, combined with ongoing franchise expansion, suggests that Night City remains a major pillar of CD Projekt Red’s future strategy.
With 40 million copies sold and more content on the horizon, Cyberpunk 2077 continues to demonstrate long-term resilience in an industry where many launches struggle to recover after initial setbacks.
