An animated teaser for BTS’s highly anticipated upcoming album, Arirang, has sparked significant debate and criticism regarding its historical and cultural accuracy.
Released as part of the promotional rollout for the group’s new project, the teaser features a time-traveling narrative that places the members in 19th-century Washington, D.C.
However, its depiction of Howard University- a prominent Historically Black College (HBCU) in the United States- has drawn backlash from Black K-pop fans and members of the HBCU community, who argue that the portrayal is racially insensitive and historically inaccurate.
Historical Context and the Origins of the Backlash
The central issue stems from the visual representation of Howard University’s student body in the 1890s.
While the teaser shows BTS performing on the campus, many of the surrounding students are depicted as white.
Critics and historical scholars have pointed out that Howard University was founded in 1867 specifically to provide higher education for Black Americans following the American Civil War.
Throughout its history, it has been a cornerstone of Black intellectual life and the civil rights movement.
Critics argue that replacing Black students with white characters in a historical setting constitutes “whitewashing” and erases the very legacy of the institution.
In response to the mounting criticism, a detailed disclaimer was added to the video to clarify the creative intent.
The disclaimer explains that the teaser was inspired by a real 1896 article from The Washington Post which documented seven young Koreans at Howard University.
These individuals are believed to have made some of the first audio recordings of Koreans in Washington, D.C., including an early rendition of the folk song “Arirang.”
The production team stated that the video is a “modern reinterpretation that may differ from historical facts and is not intended as a formal representation of real events or figures.”
Public Reaction and Calls for Cultural Sensitivity
Despite the addition of the disclaimer, the conversation surrounding the teaser has remained intense.
On platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), users have expressed disappointment, with some labeling the portrayal as “disrespectful” to the history of Howard University.
The controversy is particularly sensitive given that BTS has frequently and publicly acknowledged the deep influence of Black musical genres, such as hip-hop and R&B, on their own artistry.
This connection has led some fans to question why more care was not taken in the creative direction of a project that directly references a major Black historical institution.
The media outlet Black Enterprise reported that the backlash reflects a broader call for greater cultural sensitivity within the global K-pop industry.
While many appreciate the effort to highlight a unique moment in Korean-American history- the 1896 recording of “Arirang”- they argue that using an HBCU as a backdrop without accurately reflecting its identity overshadows the historical significance of the song itself.
As of now, Big Hit Music has not issued an additional formal statement beyond the disclaimer added to the teaser.
However, the incident has sparked a necessary dialogue about the responsibilities of global artists when navigating complex historical and cultural narratives.
