Fans of “Emily in Paris” who crave a new show with stylish glamor and romantic drama should turn to “Call My Agent!” This French comedy-drama, known in France as “Dix pour cent” (“Ten Percent”), takes viewers into the bustling world of talent agents at the fictional agency ASK.

Unlike “Emily in Paris,” which is set in an idealized version of Paris, “Call My Agent!” delivers a genuine French experience, capturing the essence of French culture and the intricacies of managing celebrities.

With a mix of French and international celebrity appearances, the show creates a vivid, authentic atmosphere that “Emily in Paris” struggles to replicate.

‘Call My Agent!’ Features a Remarkable Cast

One of the standout elements of “Call My Agent!” is its exceptional cast. Camille Cottin takes center stage as Andréa Martel, a talent agent with a complex personality.

Initially portrayed as a self-centered womanizer, Andréa’s character evolves into a devoted working mother while maintaining her core traits of elegance, sophistication, and ambition.

This character development is portrayed with depth and authenticity by Camille Cottin, making Andréa one of the most compelling female characters on television.

Thibault de Montalembert joins the cast as Mathias Barneville, another key agent at ASK and Andréa’s main professional rival. Mathias’s storyline becomes even more intricate when his long-lost daughter, Camille (played by Fanny Sidney), is secretly brought into the agency as Andréa’s assistant.

This hidden family connection adds layers to the plot and deepens the character dynamics. Fans of “Emily in Paris” may recognize Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, who plays Sylvie Grateau, in a recurring role as Mathias’s wife, Catherine.

Grégory Montel portrays Gabriel Sarda, a sensitive agent who adds emotional depth to the show. His friendship with Andréa and his romance with receptionist Sofia (played by Stéfi Celma) provide a touching contrast to the more intense storylines. Even though Gabriel’s arc might seem less dramatic compared to Andréa’s or Mathias’s, it remains a vital part of the show’s emotional scheme.

Liliane Rovère plays Arlette Azémar, a longtime agent who always has her beloved dog, Jean Gabin, by her side. While some viewers might recognize Rovère from her role as Sylvie Grateau’s mother in “Emily in Paris,” her portrayal of Arlette offers a quirky and endearing character with a rich backstory inspired by the actress’s own life. This adds another layer of charm to the series.

Nicolas Maury brings humor to the show as Gabriel’s assistant, Hervé. Often serving as comic relief, Hervé’s struggles with jealousy and his desire to be an agent or actor add a light-hearted touch.

His interactions with Camille and Mathias’s assistant, Noémie (played by Laure Calamy), contribute to the show’s intricate web of office and personal drama.

Professional and Personal Lives Intertwine for High Drama at The ASK Agency

“Call My Agent!” thrives on its well-developed characters and their interwoven stories. The drama intensifies when the ASK agency’s boss dies unexpectedly from choking on a wasp.

This loss leaves the agents to co-manage the agency, leading to a power struggle among them. Their different personalities and complex professional relationships create a dramatic and engaging narrative.

The agents engage in deceit, manipulation, and backstabbing, all in the name of serving their clients and preserving their love for cinema. The show focuses on their rivalries and conflicts, which are often as compelling as the guest stars that appear on the show.

The drama extends to the assistants, who face their own set of challenges and conflicts. For instance, Noémie’s affair with the married Mathias and Camille’s secret family connection add further layers of tension and intrigue. Even Arlette’s dog, Jean Gabin, becomes a part of the ongoing drama, adding an extra touch of humor.

‘Call My Agent!’ Features A-List French Film Stars

A significant aspect of “Call My Agent!” is its incorporation of real French film stars, adding authenticity and flair to the show.

Set against the backdrop of Paris and the French film industry, the show frequently features high-profile French celebrities. Characters mingle with these stars, attend glamorous film sets and industry events, including the Cannes Film Festival and the César Awards.

The show’s satire shines through its portrayal of the film industry. Celebrity guest stars play substantial roles in each episode, with their appearances often central to the plot.

Highlights include Juliette Binoche’s crisis at Cannes, Monica Bellucci’s comedic search for a normal date, and Charlotte Gainsbourg’s humorous struggles with a bad film.

Isabelle Huppert and Jean Dujardin also contribute their comedic talents, while Sigourney Weaver impresses with her French language skills and commentary on industry issues.

The show also addresses challenges faced by women in the industry, adding depth and relevance to its satire. “Call My Agent!” stands out as a French comedy-drama that surpasses “Emily in Paris” in its authenticity and depth.

With its compelling portrayal of the French film industry and a cast of charismatic actors, the show offers a unique blend of glamour and real-life drama. Camille Cottin’s standout performance as Andréa Martel, along with the complex interactions among the agency’s staff, provides a rich narrative full of intrigue and humor.

The frequent appearances of A-list French film stars add a layer of authenticity and charm that enhances the series’ appeal.

The show’s ability to weave together personal and professional dramas, combined with its satirical take on the film industry, makes it an attractive watch. For anyone looking to experience a genuine slice of French culture and entertainment, “Call My Agent!” is a must-watch.
