BTS has unexpectedly been pulled into a fresh debate over South Korea’s military service system after comments made by members of the country’s men’s football team following their 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games victory.
South Korea defeated Japan 1-0 in the final to claim the men’s football gold medal for a fourth consecutive Asian Games.
Under the country’s current system, eligible athletes who win an Asian Games gold medal receive a military service benefit through the arts and sports personnel system.
The celebrations, however, were followed by controversy after some players spoke about the military benefit.
Yang Minhyuk reportedly said that the military service benefit was the main thing he had been focused on while playing, while captain Lee Gihyuk also made comments concerning enlistment.
Young player Park Seungsoo additionally drew attention after sharing a photograph wearing a military-style discharge cap in the locker room.
The remarks quickly shifted the conversation toward whether the current system should continue and whether receiving the benefit through sporting achievements is fair.
BTS Becomes Part of the Military Exemption Debate
As criticism of the football players grew, BTS was unexpectedly brought into the discussion because all seven members completed their mandatory military service.
One Korean media report questioned whether it was fair for Asian Games gold medals to provide military benefits when “even global superstar BTS” had served.

The comparison triggered another wave of reactions from Korean netizens, many of whom questioned why BTS was being mentioned in a controversy unrelated to the group.
Some online commenters expressed frustration that BTS continues to be referenced whenever questions about military service and exemptions arise.
Others used the situation to argue that the current exemption system should be reconsidered.
The discussion reflects a much broader debate in South Korea.
The country’s military service benefit for outstanding athletes has existed for decades, while BTS’s international success previously led to extensive discussions over whether top K-pop artists should receive similar treatment.
Ultimately, BTS members served their mandatory duties.
Calls Grow for Changes to the Existing System
The latest controversy has now expanded beyond the football players and BTS.
Former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min has called for the abolition of military service exemptions for outstanding athletes and artists, arguing that military service should not function as a reward connected to achievements in sports or the arts.
South Korea’s existing system dates back decades and has repeatedly faced questions about fairness and whether its criteria remain appropriate today.
Current rules provide benefits to athletes who achieve specific results at major international competitions, including Asian Games gold medals.
Recent reports have emphasized the contrast between athletes receiving military benefits and globally successful entertainers such as BTS, who completed their service without receiving an exemption.
The renewed discussion therefore involves broader questions about equality, national recognition and how achievements in different fields should be treated under military service laws.
For BTS, however, the group itself is not responsible for the current controversy.
The members are being mentioned because of their previously completed military service as the country once again debates how its military service benefit system should operate.
