Star Wars Zero Company will not include official mod support when it launches, according to developer Bit Reactor. The confirmation comes despite the studio’s close ties to the XCOM series, which has long benefited from one of PC gaming’s most active modding communities. While the announcement may disappoint players hoping to customize the tactical strategy game, the developers have not ruled out unofficial creations from the community.

The update was shared during a recent developer Q&A on the official Star Wars Zero Company Discord, where fans asked whether the upcoming turn-based tactics title would receive the same mod-friendly treatment that helped extend the lifespan of XCOM 2. Although the answer was not what many expected, Bit Reactor emphasized its appreciation for community creators.

Bit Reactor explains why official mod tools are not planned

Responding to questions from fans, lead producer Caydence Funk confirmed that official modding tools are not part of the game’s launch plans. As quoted during the Discord Q&A, Funk said,

“We have a lot of respect for the modding community, but there is no official mod support planned for Star Wars Zero Company.”

The statement is notable because Bit Reactor was founded by several former Firaxis developers who previously worked on the XCOM franchise. Those games, particularly XCOM 2, received official development tools that allowed players to create new campaigns, gameplay overhauls, cosmetic packs, and even complete Star Wars-themed conversions. Many fans credit that support for keeping the strategy game active nearly a decade after release.

Given that history, some players had hoped Star Wars Zero Company would embrace a similar approach. However, Bit Reactor appears to be prioritizing development resources elsewhere ahead of launch.

Fans still hope the community will create unofficial mods

Although official tools will not be available, that does not necessarily mean the game will remain untouched by modders. PC games frequently receive unofficial modifications created through reverse engineering, especially if there is enough community interest.

Discussion on Reddit and the game’s Discord suggests mod support was among the most requested features. One fan previously wrote that without mods, the game would struggle to replace XCOM 2 in their regular rotation, highlighting how important community-created content has become for strategy enthusiasts.

Bit Reactor has also confirmed that Star Wars Zero Company will feature a linear story rather than branching narratives or romance options, placing a greater emphasis on tactical combat and squad management. Combined with extensive character customization already shown in gameplay previews, many players hope unofficial mods could eventually expand the experience even without official tools.

Whether Bit Reactor revisits mod support after launch remains unknown. For now, the studio’s focus remains on delivering its tactical Star Wars adventure, while leaving the door open for the passionate modding community to explore the game in its own way.
