In a historic move that has solidified their reputation as one of K-pop’s most unified acts, all thirteen members of SEVENTEEN– S.COUPS, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, THE 8, Mingyu, DK, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino- have officially renewed their contracts with Pledis Entertainment.
The announcement, which came on July 19, 2021, sent waves of relief and celebration throughout the global fan community, known as CARAT.
What makes this renewal particularly noteworthy is that it took place a full year before the group’s original seven-year contracts were set to expire in 2022.
By choosing to recommit early, SEVENTEEN has effectively bypassed the “seven-year curse” that often leads to the disbandment or restructuring of major groups, signaling a new era of stability and ambition for the 13-piece ensemble.
A Foundation of Mutual Trust and “One Team” Philosophy
The decision to renew was the result of extensive and “in-depth discussions” between the members and the agency regarding the long-term vision for the group.
According to the official statement from Pledis Entertainment, the renewal was built on a “foundation of mutual trust and support” that has been carefully cultivated since the group’s debut in May 2015.
Over the past six years, SEVENTEEN has grown from a promising rookie act into a global powerhouse, consistently achieving “million-seller” status and breaking into the upper echelons of international charts like the Billboard 200.
The members themselves emphasized that their primary motivation for staying together was their unwavering belief in one another.
In a collective statement shared through their agency, they expressed:
“All thirteen members agreed that we will continue to be together in the trust and strong teamwork that we have developed over the years, and as ‘One Team,’ SEVENTEEN will continue to strive to bring great music and fantastic performances to fans all around the world.”
This sentiment of being “One Team” is not just a slogan but a core identity that has defined their career, particularly as a self-producing group where members are intimately involved in the songwriting, choreography, and overall creative direction of their work.
Strategic Support for Global and Individual Growth
With the renewal finalized, Pledis Entertainment- now a subsidiary of the HYBE labels- has pledged to provide “full support” for both the group’s collective activities and the members’ individual pursuits.
This dual focus is a strategic move designed to ensure the longevity of the SEVENTEEN brand while allowing each member the space to grow as a soloist or unit performer.
The agency confirmed that they are developing “sustainable and long-term plans” for the group’s activities both in South Korea and on the international stage, aiming to heighten their global presence following successful appearances on major American talk shows.
The early renewal also provides a stable framework for the group as they navigate the coming years, which will inevitably include the members’ mandatory military service- a period that often presents a challenge to group cohesion.
By securing their future early, SEVENTEEN and Pledis have sent a clear message to the industry and the fans: they are committed to a “long-term” future that prioritizes the group’s integrity above all else.
As the agency concluded in their message to the fans,
“We ask all fans to continue to show your unceasing love and support for SEVENTEEN, and we ask that you keep your eyes on the exciting future SEVENTEEN and PLEDIS Entertainment will craft together.”
For CARATs, the announcement was more than just a legal update; it was a promise that the “Say the name” introduction will continue to be heard for many years to come.
