David Dobrik rode Vine clips to YouTube stardom, packing 18 million subscribers with quick-cut pranks and giveaway highs by 2021.

His Vlog Squad crew turned daily life into chaotic gold, raking in sponsorship cash from car drops to fast food tie-ins. Fans ate up the carefree vibe until March 2021, when Insider dropped a bombshell report on a 2018 house party gone wrong, sparking the swift fall.

Stunt Gone Wrong Ignites First Firestorm

Jeff Wittek’s 2020 excavator accident over a lake grabbed early heat. Dobrik manned the controls during a vlog shoot, spinning too wildly and slamming Wittek into a rock.

The crash shattered Jeff’s skull, cost him an eye, and forced years of surgeries. Wittek later sued in 2022, claiming negligence and linking it to Dobrik’s content machine.

Dobrik stayed quiet at first, posting vague apologies amid the fan split. Crew insiders whispered pressure to keep filming trumped safety, with stunts chasing views over sense. Brands like Dollar Shave Club paused deals, sensing risk in the fun-guy facade cracking open.

This mishap set a tone of crew loyalty over accountability, hinting at deeper crew issues bubbling under the party cliques.

Assault Allegations Craters the Kingdom

A former crew hanger-on accused Toddy Smith of rape in that 2018 vlog house bash, with Dobrik filming the setup. She detailed getting blackout drunk on funnels pushed by the group and then waking to the assault, all caught on camera for later edits. Dobrik cut the footage but posted a tame version, never checking on her after.

YouTube demonetized his channel on March 26, 2021, citing creator responsibility violations of harassment policies. Sponsors fled: Bumble, Chipotle, and SeatGeek yanked partnerships overnight, costing millions in deals tied to car giveaways and promos.

Dobrik dropped apology videos on his podcast, cutting ties with Smith and claiming shock at a friend’s actions. Critics slammed the distance as too late, with fans ditching en masse over power abuse in the squad dynamic.

Fallout Slashes Deals and Sparks Comeback Whispers

Dobrik quit the Dispo app board he co-founded, citing distraction from the photo app’s growth amid investor pushback. His empire of merch, perfumes, and views tanked, leading to a 2022 vlog halt after brief returns.

By 2025, he teased a YouTube revival on podcasts, testing the waters nearly four years post-scandal. Some loyalists welcomed the pivot to lighter fare, while others boycotted, citing unhealed wounds from Wittek’s suits and crew silence.

Crew fractures linger: Zeglaitis faced separate heat, and old videos now read as toxic to new eyes. Dobrik’s charm still hooks nostalgia seekers on Snapchat streaks, but trust rebuilds slowly in a space quick to bury kings.

Partygoers from those houses speak out in podcasts now, painting a wilder picture than edited cuts ever showed. The saga warns creators: viral highs crash hard when reality bites back.
