In 2016, it was announced that Renner had been cast as Hawkeye in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel Avengers: Endgame. Since the Mission: Impossible and Avengers films were both being shot and released around the same time, this made it virtually impossible for Renner to star in both franchises simultaneously.
Renner had become a fan favorite within the Mission: Outlandish movies, known for his dry mind and abilities as an examiner and field operator. If Brandt had returned, it might have felt like a rehash of his relationships with Hunt and Benji that had already been established in the previous two films.
