Nintendo has revealed new details about its highly anticipated live-action The Legend of Zelda movie during the franchise’s 40th Anniversary Direct. The film will officially be titled The Legend of Zelda, without a subtitle, and will use stories and concepts from across the game series as the foundation for its cinematic narrative.
Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the movie is being shaped by ideas from the Zelda franchise as a whole, suggesting audiences should not expect a straightforward adaptation of Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, Twilight Princess, or another individual game. This approach gives director Wes Ball greater freedom to create a new adventure while retaining the recognizable elements of Hyrule and its mythology.
The live-action film is being produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions, with Miyamoto and Avi Arad among its producers. Sony Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, while the movie was filmed in New Zealand.
The Legend of Zelda is currently scheduled to reach theaters on April 30, 2027. The confirmed cast includes Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda.
