The Last Samurai Plot
Captain Nathan Algren is a bitter alcoholic traumatized by the atrocities he committed during the American Indian Wars, is approached in 1876 by his former commanding officer Colonel Bagley to train the newly formed Imperial Japanese Army for a foresighted Japanese entrepreneur Omura, who aims to use the army to quash Samurai-led uprisings against Japan’s new Emperor.. Despite his hatred toward Bagley due to his role in the Indian Wars, an impoverished Algren accepts the job for the money and is accompanied to Japan by his old friend, Sergeant Zebulon Gant. Algren meets Simon Graham, a British translator who knows much about Samurai when he arrives.
Algren discovers that the Imperial soldiers are conscripted peasants without firearms or combat experience. Early in their training, Algren learns that the Samurai is attacking one of Omura’s railroads; despite Algren’s protests, Omura dispatches the army to the scene. The battle is a disaster, with the untrained conscripts being routed and Gant being killed. Before he is surrounded, Algren fights to the death; expecting to die, he is taken prisoner when samurai leader Katsumoto decides to spare him.
Captured
Algren is transported to Katsumoto’s village, where he will live with his family. While he is initially mistreated, he eventually earns the respect of the Samurai and even becomes friends with Katsumoto. Algren overcomes his alcoholism and guilt, learns Japanese culture and language, and receives kenjutsu training. He develops empathy for the Samurai, who are dissatisfied with how quickly modern technology has eroded their society’s traditions. Unspoken feelings develop between Algren and Taka, Katsumoto’s sister and the widow of a samurai killed by Algren.
Ninjas
A group of ninjas infiltrate the village one night and attempt to kill Katsumoto. Algren saves Katsumoto’s life and then assists in defending the village, concluding that Omura hired the ninjas. Katsumoto asks Emperor Meiji for a meeting and is granted safe passage to Tokyo. He brings Algren with the intention of releasing him. When Algren arrives in Tokyo, he discovers that the Imperial Army has become a well-trained and well-equipped fighting force. To his dismay, Katsumoto discovers that the Emperor, who is young and inexperienced, has essentially become Omura’s puppet.
Omura orders Katsumoto’s arrest at a government meeting for carrying a sword in public and demands that he perform seppuku to redeem his honor. Due to his sympathy, Algren declines Omura’s offer to lead the new army to crush the rebels. Omura dispatches assassins to assassinate Algren, but Algren defeats them. Algren helps the Samurai free Katsumoto, but his son Nobutada is mortally wounded, and he sacrifices himself to allow the others to escape.

A grieving Katsumoto considers seppuku as the Imperial Army marches to crush the rebellion, but Algren persuades him to fight until the end, and he joins the Samurai in battle. The Samurai used the Imperial Army’s arrogance to trap them and deprive them of artillery support. The Imperial soldiers are forced to retreat due to the ensuing battle, which results in massive casualties on both sides.
Katsumoto commands a suicide cavalry attack on the saddle, understanding that Imperial troops are on their way and that disaster is inevitable. The samurai break through Bagley’s line during the charge. Algren kills Bagley, but Gatling guns quickly slaughter the Samurai. The Imperial captain, who had previously been trained by Algren and is horrified by the sight of the dying Samurai, orders that all guns be turned off, ignoring Omura’s orders. While the soldiers on the scene kneel in homage, a fatally wounded Katsumoto performs seppuku with the help of Algren.
Whereabouts
Days later, as trade talks close, Algren arrives, injured, and disrupts the proceedings. He gives Emperor Katsumoto’s sword and requests that he remember the traditions for which Katsumoto and his fellow Samurai sacrificed their lives. While the Emperor recognizes the importance of modernization, he also recognizes the importance of Japan’s culture and history and promptly rejects the trade offer. When Omura raises his voice in protest, the Emperor threatens to seize the Omura family’s assets and distribute them among the people. While various rumors about Algren’s whereabouts circulate, Graham concludes that Algren returned to the village to reunite with Taka.
