Las Vegas band The Killers were recently awarded two Guinness World Record titles for their iconic 2003 song ‘Mr. Brightside’.
The awards were presented to band members Brandon Flowers, Dave Keuning, and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. by Guinness World Records adjudicator Will Munford ahead of their first concert of their London residency at The O2 on July 8th.
The Killers’ song ‘Mr. Brightside’ achieved two Guinness World Records: one for the ‘Most cumulative weeks on the UK singles chart (one song)’, with 416 weeks as of July 4, 2024, and another for the ‘Longest stay on the UK singles chart by a group’, also 416 weeks.
These records were recognized ahead of their concert at London’s The O2 on July 8th.
In total, ‘Mr. Brightside’ by The Killers has spent nearly eight years on the UK Top 100 singles chart, spanning 60 separate chart runs since its release 20 years ago.
Reflecting on the enduring appeal of ‘Mr Brightside’ backstage at The O2, Brandon Flowers said:
“It’s infectious still to us, I know some people can’t wrap their head around it, but you’ll see the response (when you see it live).
“It’s tough not to be touched by it or be excited by it and there’s going to be people tonight who’ve never seen it live, there’ll be some people who’ve seen it 45 times.
“And we just don’t get tired of it.”
Guinness World Records Adjudicator Will Munford, added:
“‘Mr Brightside’ has filled countless dancefloors and been responsible for many end-of-night singalongs since the mid-2000s.
“It was an honour to present The Killers with two Guinness World Records titles for the song, it is a testament to its ability to be loved across generations and stand the test of time as one of the all-time classics.”
‘Mr. Brightside’ by The Killers was initially released in 2003 and re-released in 2004 as the first single from their debut album, Hot Fuss.
Despite peaking at No. 10 on June 5, 2004, it spent only one week in the Top 20 and seven weeks in the Top 40.
In May 2024, it was recognized as the UK’s biggest single never to have reached No. 1, accumulating 5.57 million combined units (1.066 million sales and 530.34 million streams).
During The Killers’ third London O2 show on July 10th, 2024, the band coincidentally launched into ‘Mr. Brightside’ just as England secured their Euros 2024 semi-final win against The Netherlands.
