Like many fans, I was eagerly awaiting the release of the My Hero Academia manga finale. It’s been a long journey following the series for years, and despite the temptation to check out leaks, I held off until the official translation was released on August 4. After seeing how some fans reacted to the leaked fan translation of the finale, I’m very glad I waited.

It’s common for new chapters of Shonen Jump manga to leak online before their official release, with dedicated fans quickly translating and sharing them across the internet. This happened with My Hero Academia chapter #430, but this time, something went wrong.

Fans who read the leaks were upset, thinking that Deku had been abandoned by his friends and was left to struggle alone, working a fairly ordinary job as a teacher while everyone else had become successful heroes. If that had actually happened, it would be understandable why fans were distressed, but that wasn’t the case.

Fan Translations Mislead My Hero Academia Fans, Causing Outcry Over Misinterpreted Chapter

The fan translations misinterpreted some key lines, giving the chapter a much sadder tone than the official translation. A major example is a moment in the official translation where Deku admits that he misses being a hero, even though he enjoys his current job as a teacher at UA.

However, the fan translation turned this into “Do I feel lonely? Yeah, I admit I feel lonely sometimes.” The context in the official version is entirely different; Deku isn’t missing people, he’s missing the work of being a hero.

In the fan translation, one line, along with other parts of the chapter, like Deku lamenting that it’s harder for the class to get together as adults, led many fans to think Deku was almost forgotten by his classmates. They believed that while everyone else became successful pro heroes, Deku was left behind as a teacher.

This is a completely wrong interpretation of the chapter, and because of this mistake, many fans went on a rampage, claiming the ending was terrible and ruined the entire story. These fans are upset about something that didn’t actually happen.

Fan translators usually don’t have professional experience in translation, nor do they have access to the resources that official translators might have. While the official My Hero Academia translation can occasionally have some issues, these problems are much rarer than the ones found in fan translations. Yet, for some reason, many fans trust the fan translation over the official one.

Official Translation Clarifies My Hero Academia’s Realistic Portrayal of Adult Life and Deku’s Fulfillment as a Teacher

In the official translation, the lines about it being more difficult for the class to meet up are clearly just acknowledging the reality of growing up. When everyone gets older and has different jobs, especially demanding ones with unusual hours like being a pro hero, it’s only natural that it would be harder for them to see each other compared to when they were in school and saw each other every day.

This is another example of the realism that makes My Hero Academia so great. The characters have moved on from their school days, and Horikoshi chose to show the challenges of adult life, even if only briefly. It’s meant to be realistic, not sad. The fact that the class still tries to meet up regularly, despite the difficulties, shows they still care for each other.

The official translation also clearly shows that even though being a teacher wasn’t his childhood dream, Deku is happy at UA. He sees it as a way to give back, helping his students develop the kind of dreams that will push them to become great heroes.

He’s using his experience and skills to train the next generation, teaching them values that are important for a pro hero. Fans who dismiss Deku’s choice to be a teacher as just a “boring normal job” are also showing a lack of respect for the teaching profession.

Deku’s Hero Comeback: Classmates’ Costly Gift Reveals His True Value in My Hero Academia’s Final Pages

Finally, there are the last pages of the chapter, where Deku receives an advanced super suit designed to let even a Quirkless person do hero work. This gives Deku the chance to be a hero again, and he’s excited about it.

Even in the fan translation, it’s clear that this suit was made and funded by his former classmates, proving that Deku was never “forgotten.” He was always on his friends’ minds, even when they couldn’t always be there with him.

Many fans overlooked the true value of that gesture. The suit Deku received must have cost a fortune, and in the series, even heroes who saved the world don’t have unlimited funds. This means Bakugo and the others worked hard for eight years, saving a huge amount of money just to give their friend a chance to be a hero again. Yet, some fans ignored this, clinging to their biased view of an “unfair” ending.

How Mistakes and Toxic Fandom Skewed My Hero Academia’s Final Chapter

In some cases, there isn’t an official translation, so fans rely on translations done by dedicated fans. This is the only way English-speaking fans can enjoy some series, like Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, which still doesn’t have an official English translation of part 9.

However, readers should remember that fan translations are usually done by non-professionals, and translating from Japanese to English is particularly challenging, even for experienced translators.

Long-time anime and manga fans remember when official English translations were rare, so they’re used to relying on fan translations. But fan translations are more likely to have mistakes, and as we saw with My Hero Academia, those mistakes can sometimes change the tone of an entire chapter.

That said, the blame doesn’t lie only with the mistaken translations. Some anime fandoms can be very toxic, and My Hero Academia has faced this kind of behavior before. Much of the criticism of the final chapter came from comparisons with other series, but those who feel this way should reread not just the final chapter, but the entire My Hero Academia story.

This would help them understand how Horikoshi pursued his storytelling vision all along and brought it to a perfect and natural conclusion.
