Studio Orange, a pioneering force in CG animation within the anime industry, has recently shed light on its journey through the past and its vision for the future.

Founded in 2004, Studio Orange has carved a significant niche for itself over the years, contributing substantially to the anime canon with notable projects such as Trigun Stampede, Land of The Lustrous, Beastars, and Godzilla Singular Point.

In an illuminating interview with Comic Natalie, Studio Orange’s founder, Eiji Onomoto, delved into the genesis of the studio and its evolution amidst the shifting tides of the anime industry.

Onomoto candidly revealed his initial trepidation about establishing a studio solely dedicated to computer-generated animation. The burgeoning demand for CG within the anime sphere was palpable, driven by its capacity to address the intricacies and challenges unattainable through traditional animation methods. Yet, the landscape was fraught with uncertainty, prompting Onomoto to question the sustainability of a CG-centric production house.

The turning point arrived with the inception of “Land of The Lustrous,” a groundbreaking project that catalyzed a paradigm shift in the perception of CG animation among anime enthusiasts. Onomoto reminisced fondly about the pivotal role played by “Land of The Lustrous,” asserting its status as a flagship work for Studio Orange.

The project, in which Orange served as the primary contractor, garnered widespread recognition, heralding a new era where CG characters were embraced with open arms. It was a testament to the studio’s unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence, laying the groundwork for subsequent endeavors.

Moreover, Onomoto emphasized the continuous refinement of Studio Orange’s craft, underscoring their relentless pursuit of quality and diversity in expression.

Building upon the success of “Land of The Lustrous,” the studio embarked on a journey of relentless improvement, leveraging its newfound momentum to push the boundaries of CG animation further. With each project, Studio Orange sought to push the envelope, exploring novel techniques and approaches while staying true to its artistic ethos.

Indeed, the trajectory of Studio Orange serves as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and innovation within the anime industry. From humble beginnings fraught with uncertainty to a position of prominence and influence, the studio’s evolution stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit of creativity.

As the anime continues to evolve, Studio Orange remains poised to chart new frontiers, driving the medium forward with its bold vision and unwavering commitment to excellence.
