Netflix has officially expanded its partnership with Proximity Media, the production company co-founded by Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian, through a new multi-year agreement focused on developing original television series. The deal strengthens an already successful relationship and signals Netflix’s continued investment in high-impact, creator-driven content.
Under this agreement, Proximity Media will exclusively develop scripted television projects for Netflix, positioning the studio as a key contributor to the platform’s evolving global slate. The move reflects Netflix’s broader strategy to collaborate with filmmakers known for delivering culturally resonant and commercially successful stories.
Expanding a Strong Creative Partnership
The collaboration builds on a foundation of successful projects that have already defined Proximity Media’s television presence. The company has been involved in notable productions such as Ironheart, the docuseries Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time, and the animated series Eyes of Wakanda, showcasing its ability to work across genres and formats.
By securing exclusive development rights, Netflix is effectively doubling down on Proximity Media’s storytelling approach, which focuses on elevating underrepresented narratives while maintaining wide audience appeal. This aligns closely with the streaming giant’s push for diverse and globally relevant content.
In a statement shared via Netflix’s official press release, the founders highlighted their long-term creative vision.
“We started Proximity Media with a simple goal: to tell event-driven stories that bring people in close proximity with often overlooked subjects,”
Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Ohanian said.
They added,
“As we continue to expand Proximity’s television business, we’re thrilled to partner with Netflix, a company that has consistently demonstrated its commitment to distinctive creators and original storytelling.”

Netflix executives have expressed strong confidence in Proximity Media’s ability to deliver compelling series that resonate globally. Jinny Howe, Head of Scripted Series for the U.S. and Canada, emphasized the company’s creative track record in the same release.
“Proximity Media has built a remarkable reputation for championing visionary creators and producing stories that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide,”
Howe said.
This partnership reflects a broader industry trend, where major streaming platforms are prioritizing long-term deals with established creators to maintain a competitive edge. For Netflix, aligning with Ryan Coogler’s team ensures a steady pipeline of premium, story-driven content.
High-Profile Projects Already in Development
Proximity Media’s television division, led by Simone Harris, is already working on several ambitious projects. One of the most talked-about is a new adaptation of The X-Files, starring Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel, aiming to reintroduce the iconic franchise to a new generation.
Another major project is the live-action adaptation of Southern Bastards, featuring Kevin Bacon, Erin Kellyman, and Tim McGraw. These productions highlight the company’s strategy of blending recognizable intellectual properties with fresh creative perspectives.
The approach reflects current audience demand for both familiarity and innovation, a balance that streaming platforms increasingly rely on to sustain engagement.
