The Kansas City Chiefs’ offseason plans have taken a major hit as wide receiver Rashee Rice has been ordered back to jail, creating serious concerns for the team’s offensive rhythm ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
According to a report published by The Times of India on May 20, 2026, the 26-year-old wide receiver has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after a Texas court ruled that he violated the terms of his probation by testing positive for THC (the psychoactive compound found in marijuana).
The probation stemmed from a high-speed, multi-vehicle crash on March 30, 2024, on the North Central Expressway in Dallas.
In July 2025, Rice had accepted a plea deal involving two third-degree felony charges, receiving five years of deferred probation, over $115,000 in restitution payments, and a mandatory 30-day jail sentence.
While the original agreement allowed him flexibility on when to serve the jail time, his recent failed drug test forced the Dallas County court to order his immediate booking on Monday, May 18, 2026.
Sidelined for Vital Offseason Workouts and Minicamp
The timing of the jail sentence is incredibly problematic for head coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs organization.
Sidelined without bond at the Dallas County jail, Rice is scheduled for release on June 16, 2026. This timeline ensures he will completely miss critical stretches of the Chiefs’ offseason program, including:
- Voluntary Organized Team Activities (OTAs): Scheduled for May 26–28 and June 1–3.
- Mandatory Minicamp: Scheduled for June 9–11.
These spring sessions are typically crucial for quarterbacks and wide receivers to build baseline chemistry and timing before full training camp opens later in the summer.
A Double-Whammy: Double-Sidelined by Knee Surgery
Making matters worse for the Chiefs’ wide receiver room, the legal setback is not the only issue keeping Rice off the field.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter reported that just prior to his booking, Rice underwent a surgical “cleanup” procedure on his right knee in Dallas to remove loose debris and reduce lingering inflammation.
The recovery timeline for the knee surgery is estimated at roughly two months.
The Chiefs now face a highly complicated situation where Rice’s medical rehabilitation must happen concurrently with his 30-day incarceration, likely slowing down his physical recovery path.
Shaky Ground for the Chiefs’ Offense
Though Rice is expected to be out of custody in plenty of time for training camp and the Chiefs’ Week 1 opener against the Denver Broncos, his recurring off-field issues have sparked intense frustration among fans and analysts alike.
Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Rice’s reliability is on thin ice.
Despite proving himself as a highly productive target when available- catching 53 passes for 571 yards and 5 touchdowns over 8 games in 2025 following a 6-game personal conduct suspension- his combination of legal troubles and physical setbacks leaves Kansas City’s receiver depth chart under a cloud of uncertainty as they look to rebound from a disappointing 2025 season.
