1994’s The Crow, directed by Alex Proyas, is a film that many consider a modern classic. Its reputation is partly due to its touching story and the tragic death of its star, Brandon Lee, during filming. Watching The Crow feels like paying tribute to an actor whose life was cut short too soon.

When it was announced that a reboot was in the works for 2024, directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, many fans reacted with disappointment. They felt it was inappropriate to reboot a film that holds such emotional significance for many people.

Moreover, Skarsgård’s portrayal of Draven seemed different from Lee’s, and the marketing suggested the new film would be similar to John Wick. This led to skepticism and concern among fans. Despite the negative reception from critics and audiences, I found the reboot surprisingly enjoyable.

While the 2024 version may not reach the heights of the original, it offers a significant improvement: the depiction of the relationship between Eric Draven and Shelly. By focusing on this aspect, the new film brings a fresh and emotionally powerful experience.

1994’s The Crow: A Love Story Told in Flashbacks

The original 1994 The Crow blends various genres, drawing from graphic novels by James O’Barr. These novels were inspired by O’Barr’s personal grief over the death of his fiancée, who was killed by a drunk driver. Through the story of The Crow, O’Barr channeled his feelings of revenge and loss.

The film tells the tale of Eric Draven, who returns from the dead to avenge the murder of his fiancée, Shelly. This premise makes the film a mix of superhero action, Gothic horror, and romance.

However, one area where the original film falls short is in its depiction of Eric and Shelly’s romance. The film does an excellent job with other elements, but the love story is lacking. The issue isn’t with the acting, but with how their relationship is presented.

Eric is portrayed as a rock musician, and both he and Shelly are brutally attacked in their home. Shelly is sexually assaulted, and both are killed in the opening scenes. The film only shows their relationship through brief views and flashbacks, which limits the emotional depth of their story.

The 2024 Version of The Crow: A New Approach to the Love Story

The 2024 reboot of The Crow had a rough start. It received a poor 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made only $4.6 million at the box office during its opening weekend. Despite these disappointing figures, the film deserves recognition for its attempt to offer a new perspective.

Instead of being filled with fan service and Easter eggs, this reboot tries to reimagine the story. Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of Eric Draven, but this version of the character is not a rock star. Instead, he is portrayed as a lonely man living in a rehab center, struggling with his past traumas.

When Shelly, played by FKA Twigs, arrives at the rehab center, Eric is immediately drawn to her. He is attracted by her kindness and beauty, and she seems to notice him in return. For the first time, Eric feels seen and valued. Their connection becomes the film’s emotional core.

A supernatural crimelord and his minions target Shelly, and Eric risks everything to help her escape. He ultimately decides to join her because she has become his reason for living. The film allows us to experience their relationship in a way that the 1994 version did not.

By showing their love story in detail, the 2024 film makes their eventual deaths more poignant. This approach adds a new layer of emotional depth to the story, making it more impactful.

Bill Skarsgård’s Eric Draven: A Deeper Emotional Motivation

In the 1994 film, The Crow is primarily a revenge story. Eric Draven must kill the men who murdered Shelly. He achieves his revenge but is mortally wounded in the process.

The film ends with Eric collapsing at Shelly’s grave, where Shelly’s ghost appears to take him with her. This ending is both heartbreaking and somewhat comforting, as it brings the two lovers together again in death.

The 2024 reboot changes this narrative. Eric is informed by a spirit named Kronos that if he kills those who killed Shelly, he can bring her back to life. When Eric fails multiple times, Kronos tells him that Shelly is falling into eternal damnation and that he has run out of chances.

Eric then offers his soul in exchange for Shelly’s life. This sacrifice shows the depth of his love for Shelly. He is willing to condemn himself to save her, making his act the ultimate display of selflessness. This new ending provides a more intense emotional impact than the original film’s conclusion.

While the 1994 film’s dark ending was intense, the reboot’s conclusion adds a different emotional weight. The film may have received mixed reviews, but it provides a unique take on the classic story.

Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of Eric Draven brings a new dimension to the character, which some viewers may appreciate. The film’s cinematography, score, and action scenes are impressive, and the focus on Eric and Shelly’s relationship stands out.

Even if the film isn’t universally liked, it offers a fresh perspective on the classic tale. The 2024 reboot of The Crow offers a fresh emotional depth, with Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs delivering heartfelt performances.

The Crow is currently showing in theaters across the U.S.
