The long-awaited Naruto live-action movie may be taking some creative liberties with its central characters. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, the film will reportedly preserve much of the original story while changing several character details, including Naruto’s interests and Sakura’s family history.
The movie is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and has been in development for several years. However, fans may have mixed feelings about some of the reported changes.
NARUTO COULD BECOME A HISTORY NERD
According to Richtman’s claims, Naruto will reportedly be portrayed as someone with an interest in history despite continuing to struggle academically.
This would represent a notable adjustment to Naruto Uzumaki’s characterization. The original manga establishes him as a mischievous and academically weak student who initially seeks recognition from the Hidden Leaf Village.
However, the insider reportedly emphasized that the movie will remain “faithful” to the source material, with numerous scenes from the first manga arc recreated almost shot-for-shot. The reported changes are primarily character-focused rather than major alterations to the central plot.
SAKURA’S FAMILY STORY COULD BE EXPANDED
Sakura Haruno is also reportedly receiving a substantially different backstory. The report claims that her father will have died before the events of the movie, while her relationship with her mother will be strained.
Her early relationship with Sasuke may also be toned down, with the adaptation allegedly giving Sasuke some degree of reciprocal interest in Sakura.

These changes could allow the movie to give Sakura more personal motivations earlier in the story. At the same time, some fans have questioned whether altering her original characterization is necessary when the manga already provides opportunities to establish her intelligence and abilities.
THE FIRST NARUTO ARC WILL REMAIN THE FOUNDATION
Despite the reported character changes, the most reassuring detail for fans is the claim that the Naruto live-action movie will remain closely connected to the original first arc.
Adapting Naruto for live action inevitably requires condensing material originally designed for a long-running manga and anime. The challenge will be determining which character elements can be changed without weakening the personalities and relationships that made the original story so popular.
With Cretton directing, the film still has considerable potential to establish Naruto’s world for a new audience. However, these reported changes are likely to remain a major discussion point among longtime fans until official details are revealed.
