Manga Mavericks Books made several major announcements during San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2026, revealing a brand-new manga license, the next chapter of one of its ongoing indie series, and a new initiative designed to support independent manga creators. The North American publisher confirmed it has licensed Our Insignificant Justice by Rin Kawano, while also announcing the release date for Divine Messengers & Demonic Guardians Chapter 5 by Koukoku Brothers.
The announcements highlight Manga Mavericks Books’ continued focus on bringing unique Japanese manga to English-speaking readers. Alongside the new releases, the publisher also introduced the Independent Manga Alliance, a collaborative venture aimed at helping independent creators and small publishers expand their reach through distribution, marketing, and sales support. Together, these updates represent a significant expansion of the company’s publishing efforts beyond its roots as a manga news outlet.
Our Insignificant Justice heads to English readers in 2027
The biggest announcement from the panel was the English license for Our Insignificant Justice, a standalone music-themed drama by Rin Kawano, originally published in Japan by TWO VIRGINS. The manga will be released in print and digital formats in March 2027, with the print edition priced at $14.99 and the digital edition at $6.99.
Spanning 248 pages, the story follows the mysterious disappearance of singer Sayoko Tano, an event that profoundly affects the fans, friends, and loved ones she leaves behind. Through six interconnected perspectives set across Tokyo and Miyazaki Prefecture, the manga explores grief, memory, and the lasting influence one person can have on many lives.
Rin Kawano, who also creates under the pen name “Gomen,” shared a message for SDCC attendees celebrating the English release.
“Our Insignificant Justice is a precious work to me, as it was my first series as a manga artist to be serialized and released in print.”
The creator also expressed excitement about reaching an international audience, adding:
“I’m incredibly honored that even more readers will have the opportunity to experience this important work!”
Divine Messengers & Demonic Guardians Chapter 5 arrives in August
Manga Mavericks Books also confirmed that Divine Messengers & Demonic Guardians Chapter 5 by Koukoku Brothers will launch digitally on August 25, 2026, priced at $0.99. Intended for readers aged 13 and older, the 24-page chapter continues the creators’ independently published manga series, which has been distributed at manga events throughout Japan.
The new installment follows Dori and Mahaara after discovering that demons and angels share more similarities than they first believed. As the revelation threatens both of their worlds, the pair face expulsion while confronting deeper questions about the relationship between angels and demons. A mysterious offer of refuge introduces another turning point, leaving them to question whether it promises freedom or an even more unsettling truth.
Manga Mavericks Books confirmed it plans to continue publishing future chapters digitally as they are completed, with a collected print edition planned for a later date.
Independent Manga Alliance launches to support creators
Beyond its publishing announcements, Manga Mavericks Books introduced the Independent Manga Alliance, a new initiative co-founded by Varun Gupta, CEO of Manga Mavericks LLC, and Harrison Doan, Head of Partnerships and Licensing for Mahjong Pros.
The alliance aims to provide independent creators and smaller publishers with greater access to distribution, marketing, and sales opportunities. Founding members include Manga Mavericks Books, Mahjong Pros, Strict Algorithm LLC, Red String Manga, and Curation Entertainment Partners Inc.
Originally established as a manga news podcast in 2016, Manga Mavericks has steadily expanded into publishing.
