Manchuria Opium Squad is getting an anime adaptation, bringing the acclaimed crime suspense manga to a new audience. The series has surpassed 3.5 million copies in circulation in Japan, making the anime announcement a significant milestone for the franchise. Alongside the announcement, the first Manchuria Opium Squad anime visual has been revealed, offering the first look at the upcoming adaptation.
Set in Manchuria in 1937, the story follows Isamu Higata, a soldier in the Kwantung Army who loses sight in his right eye during battle. After returning from the battlefield, Isamu becomes desperate to save his seriously ill mother. His circumstances eventually draw him into the illegal production of opium, placing him at the center of a dangerous criminal operation.

The manga was created by Tsukasa Monma, with art by Tsurushima and original art concepts by Shikako. The series is serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Young Magazine and currently has 22 collected volumes available in Japan.
The manga has also resumed serialization with the October 5 issue of Weekly Young Magazine. To celebrate its return, Tsurushima revealed a new illustration.
