Mahershala Ali has responded to Kevin Feige’s admission that the long-delayed Blade movie became one of the biggest failures of his career. The two-time Oscar winner, who was attached to star as the Marvel vampire hunter, says he agrees with Feige’s harsh assessment after spending years preparing for a film that ultimately never reached production.
Ali discussed the abandoned project during an interview with GQ, explaining that his commitment to Blade went far beyond simply being attached to the cast.
Mahershala Ali Spent a Year Training for Blade
Ali revealed that he spent approximately a year preparing for the role, including extensive sword training and martial arts work. The physical preparation even resulted in an injury, highlighting how seriously he had committed to portraying Blade.
“Once it was happening, I was working on it,
” Ali explained during the GQ interview.
“I was doing what I needed to do to prepare myself. It just didn’t happen.”
The actor also clarified that Blade affected his career opportunities while the project was still moving through development. Rather than simply turning down roles because he was waiting for the Marvel film, Ali said he was actively working on Blade preparation while other opportunities passed him by.
That makes the project’s eventual collapse particularly significant for the actor, who had been attached to the film since Marvel officially announced it in 2019.
Ali Agrees With Feige’s “Biggest Failure” Assessment
Ali was also asked about Feige’s previous comments regarding the movie. In a conversation with Happy Sad Confused, the Marvel Studios president described the failure to make Ali’s Blade film as a major personal disappointment, calling himself a “gigantic loser and failure.”
Ali was told about those comments during his GQ interview and offered an unusually direct response.
“Kevin says it was the biggest failure of his career, and I agree,”
Ali said.
When the interviewer specifically mentioned Feige’s
“gigantic loser and failure”
remark, Ali responded,
“I agree with him, 100%.”
When asked whether Feige should feel that way, Ali added,
“He should feel that way.”
Despite his frustration, Ali said he still does not know exactly why the project failed to materialize. He pointed toward Marvel’s leadership when asked for an explanation.
“That’s a Kevin Feige question,”
Ali said, adding that Marvel had a two-time Oscar-winning actor under contract and significant financial resources behind the project.
What Happened to Marvel’s Blade Movie?
Blade spent years in development hell, going through multiple changes behind the scenes before Marvel ultimately abandoned the project. Feige’s comments in July confirmed that the version starring Ali was no longer moving forward.
Ali’s comments provide a rare perspective from the actor directly affected by the project’s lengthy development. For now, Marvel’s future plans for Blade remain unclear, although Wesley Snipes’ return as the character in Deadpool & Wolverine demonstrated that the vampire hunter still has a place within the broader Marvel universe.
